The Prime Minister, the Council of Torah Sages and members of the coalition arrive at Aryeh Deri's house after the announcement of the verdict (Roni Kanfo)
Shas Chairman Aryeh Deri decided today (Monday) to appoint a member of his party Moshe Arbel to the position of Minister of Health and Interior.
The Knesset plenum will convene on Wednesday for a special recess hearing where the appointment in Deri's place will be approved, this after his tenure was disqualified by the High Court of Justice following his conviction for tax offenses. Since his tenure was
disqualified, the coalition tried to advance in Deri's favor the proposal that would block judicial review of ministerial appointments But at the last moment Deri asked to remove the proposal from the agenda and not put it to a vote due to the freeze on the legal reform and the assumption that the High Court of Justice would most likely reject his appointment again.
The decision was published by Shas through a letter from Rabbi Moshe Maya, a member of the Council of Sages of Shas who writes that Arbel's appointment is a witness to Deri's return to the position of minister, even though the chances of this are extremely low.
The Shas estimates that Arbel, who is considered Deri's confidant, will be the acting minister, but Deri will manage the government ministries as he has done so far in the last three months.
