A TikTok challenge has claimed the life of a 13-year-old teenager in Columbus, Ohio, after he overdosed on an over-the-counter drug in the United States.

According to Jacob Stevens's family, who spoke to ABC 6,

the young man took 12 to 14 Benadryl

(diphenhydramine) pills to allegedly experience hallucinations.

In his place, Stevens suffered a fatal reaction that led to his death.

Pharmaceutical company Johnson & Johnson issued a public warning explaining that "the Benadryl TikTok trend is extremely concerning, dangerous and must stop immediately," the Post reported.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) published a similar notice.

"Taking higher than recommended doses of the non-prescription drug diphenhydramine (Benadryl)

can cause serious heart problems, seizures, coma and even death," the agency said.

"We are aware of press reports of a teenager ending up in an emergency room after taking part in a 'Benadryl challenge,' spurred by videos posted on TikTok."

The agency added that "health professionals should be aware that the 'Benadryl challenge' is taking place among adolescents and raise awareness" about it.
