Chad's President, General Mahamat Idriss Déby Itno, promised on Friday the release of at least 12 men, including 11 army officers, accused of having attempted a "coup"

in

December 2022.

Mahamat Déby had been proclaimed transitional president two years ago by the army, at the head of a junta of 15 generals, on the announcement of the death of his father, Idriss Déby Itno, killed at the front against rebels after ruling Chad with an iron fist for 30 years.

National Reconciliation Forum

Despite a promise to return power to civilians through elections after 18 months, he was reappointed in October 2022, following a national reconciliation forum boycotted by the opposition and the main rebel movements, for a new transition period of 18 months.

On January 5, the government claimed to have arrested, from December 8, 2022, 11 officers and a known human rights activist, Baradine Berdei Targuio, presented as the mastermind of an "attempt to destabilize

"

"

constitutional order

" and "

of the institutions of the Republic

".

"

I pledge before you and before God to release all compatriots charged for their involvement in the failed coup last December

," Mahamat Déby said Friday in a speech on the occasion of the Eid al-Fitr, the Muslim holiday that marks the end of the holy fasting month of Ramadan.

Baradine Berdei Targuio, president of the Chadian Human Rights Organization (OTDH), is a well-known human rights defender and a vocal critic of the Déby father and son regimes.

Since the arrests, nothing had filtered through the investigation.

On Friday, the head of state did not provide any additional details in his speech and no government official could be reached for clarification.

Young people pardoned and released

At the end of March, Mahamat Déby had already pardoned and then released 259 young people sentenced to prison, arrested for having, according to the authorities, participated on October 20, 2022, the date of the end of the first transition period, in a demonstration in N 'Djamena against staying in power.

It had been bloodily repressed by the security forces.

According to the government, 73 people were killed, but many more according to the opposition and national and international NGOs, which claim to have subsequently documented numerous arbitrary arrests, enforced disappearances, summary executions and even acts of torture.

In his speech on Friday, Mahamat Déby also announced the release of other people arrested on October 20, in the provinces.

Without specifying the number.
