Demonstrations: a petition calls for better cleaning of tags from the mayor of Lyon

While the mobilization against the pension reform has lined the walls of the city with graffiti, a resident of the 1st arrondissement is asking for their cleaning and the creation of a dedicated brigade.

Le Figaro Lyon

The processions of opponents of the pension reform and the use of article 49-3 of the Constitution have left their mark even on the walls of Lyon.

In addition to public buildings, town halls and police stations in particular, degraded by a fringe of violent demonstrators, many tags have appeared in recent weeks in the city.

This is too much for a resident of the slopes of the Croix Rousse, Édouard Hoffman, who deplores the deterioration of the living environment in the Unesco perimeter of the city.

After having multiplied the emails addressed to the elected officials, he decided to launch an online petition to ask the town hall for the removal of these graffiti, as well as the creation of a specialized brigade.

Like the right-wing opposition politicians who had published a press release in mid-April denouncing

“the passivity”

of the ecological mayor, Grégory Doucet, in the face of the degradations, Édouard Hoffman deplores too slow action.

“These tags are being erased very quickly

,” opposes the central town hall.

This was particularly the case when the Town Hall was targeted on March 16.

Obviously many graffiti persist on the walls of Lyon, whether they appeared following recent demonstrations or not.

More than 300 interventions

The mayor's entourage evokes more than 300 interventions from mid-January to early April, on graffiti made on the sidelines of the social movement, more than 6000 square meters.

The municipality has conceded the cleaning of public and private facades to the company HTP center Est until 2024. Traders and individuals who wish to have graffiti removed must therefore subscribe to a contract called clean facade with the city services, then ask cleaning by phone or email.

It will cost them an annual fee of 15.90 euros per linear meter of facade for individuals (17.40 euros if the building is less than 2 years old) and 88.80 euros for traders, regardless of the size of the storefront.

Launched in February, the petition has now exceeded 1,500 signatures and received the support of an association of traders from the slopes as well as several district councils, in the 1st arrondissement or elsewhere.

Because if the

“ACAB”

,

“death to the bourgeois

” and other slogans against the pension reform have recently flourished on the walls of Lyon, the latter were far from being virgin before.

In Old Lyon, the inscriptions of neo-fascist groups are recurrent for example, and covered by mentions of the extreme left in an uninterrupted paint spray fight.

The local neighborhood council has also supported the petition.
