Teacher compensation: Emmanuel Macron's announcements coldly welcomed

2023-04-21T03:13:47.590Z

Professors who engage in additional missions will be able to receive “up to 500 euros per month”, assured the Head of State, traveling to a college in Hérault.

Pap Ndiaye had assured him in his interview with Figaro on April 13:

“the big subject of the revaluation of teachers”

would be

“detailed”

this week.

Promise kept with the move of Emmanuel Macron and his Minister of Education to a college in Ganges (Hérault), this Thursday.

The Head of State announced a two-part upgrade.

First, as part of the “base” (1.9 billion euros in a full year), all teachers will be increased

“from 100 to 230 euros net per month”.

"There will be no more teachers below 2,000 euros per month

," promised the President of the Republic, before insisting that the increase would concern

"all career levels"

.

An evolution compared to the initial project, in which the first halves of a career were

“privileged”

, then clarified Rue de Grenelle.

Then, within the framework of the "pact" (1.1 billion euros in a full year), the teachers who will choose

"on a completely voluntary basis"

to engage

"in addition"

in various missions (replacements, investment in devices 'homework done' or 'boost' ...) can receive

"up to 500 euros per month"

.

“We are betting that at least a third of teachers will adhere”

to this “pact”, launched Emmanuel Macron.

2640 euros on average in the public

“Given the salaries of teachers”

, this revaluation constitutes

“a change of life, a small Copernican revolution”

, boasted the head of state from the court of the Louise Michel college.

According to the statistical overview of school education staff 2021-2022, public teachers earn on average 2640 euros net per month, with a marked difference between the first and second degree: 2400 euros in primary, 2870 euros in middle school.

In private education under contract, the "assimilated holders" are paid an average of 2360 euros net per month (2130 euros in the first degree, 2490 in the second degree).

"Fool's Market"

Unsurprisingly, these announcements from the executive were coldly received by the teacher unions.

“Obviously, the 100 to 230 euros, we will take them.

But if the objective was to create a shock of attractiveness, we are far from it

, ”says Sophie Vénétitay, general secretary of Snes-FSU, the first secondary school union.

"The 100 euros will not be enough to make up for the loss of purchasing power in the face of inflation"

, adds Stéphane Crochet, secretary general of SE-Unsa.

It is especially the part “pact” which concentrates the criticisms.

“Without the 'pact', the announcements on the 'base' would have been perceived as insufficient but positive.

There, they are canceled by the persistence on the 'pact' which is a kind of fool's bargain”

, reacts Stéphane Crochet.

“The confirmation of this 'pact' is a provocation.

All the trade unions had left the negotiating table on this subject, and yet Emmanuel Macron applies it.

It looks furiously like the method with which the pension reform was carried out

, ”adds Sophie Vénétitay.

The trade unions also note that

"once again"

, announcements in the field of education are provided by Emmanuel Macron and not by Pap Ndiaye, in

"withdrawal".

“We have seen since the start of this second five-year term that the Head of State has taken control of education issues.

We feel that he wants to imprint his mark, at the risk of erasing his Minister of National Education … ”,

comments Sophie Vénétitay.
