Berger mayor complains about too many beavers

Beavers have multiplied in the district in recent years.

Apparently too much, according to Berg's mayor, Rupert Steigenberger.

Catching animals is legally difficult and doesn't bring much, says the district office.

Berg

- In many sections, the Lüßbach is the best residential area for a neighbor who is becoming increasingly unwelcome to some mountain residents.

Coming from the old district of Wolfratshausen, the stream meanders through Münsing, Höhenrain, Bachhausen and Farchach before dropping off behind Kempfenhausen in the direction of Percha and Lake Starnberg.

Adjacent meadows are often wet even when it's not raining.

Then a beaver may have built a dam to adjust the water level to its needs.

One of his main needs: The entrance to his beaver burrow should be under water, around 80 centimeters deep.

The fact that waterlogging on forage meadows can then make mowing more difficult is one of the problems that Jürgen Slawisch wants to solve together with those affected.

"Sometimes you can lower the dam a bit," says the honorary beaver adviser from the Starnberg District Office, who is responsible for Berg, Gilching and Weßling.

The district office sees no need for action

"Mountain is disproportionately represented in my work," reports Slawisch.

But he currently does not see any problems that cannot be solved by appropriate measures.

If the beaver gnaws on trees that shouldn't fall over, a simple wire often helps.

The word removal - it means capturing or shooting down beavers - has not yet played a role in Slavic.

For others it is.

"The beaver is starting to get the upper hand," said Berg's mayor Rupert Steigenberger this week in the municipal council after several council members reported beaver damage in the municipal area.

An animal gnawed on poles on two boathouses, which therefore had to be replaced.

According to Steigenberger, he was recently in a conversation with the hunting association, where they were considering applying for a removal.

The beaver is strictly protected.

The lower nature conservation authority in the district office must therefore allow removal, and they can only do so under very specific conditions.

This can be the case if the beaver undermines roads or dams that serve to protect against flooding.

It is not possible to demolish his structures without consulting the beaver advisor.

The beaver lodge is also taboo.

At the Lüßbach, according to the district office next to the Hälsbach a "hotspot" of the beaver population in the municipality of Berg, a removal would hardly bring anything, the lower nature conservation authority said at the request of the Starnberger Merkur.

Territories that become free in this way do not remain unoccupied for long.

They would quickly be taken over by young animals looking for territory.

Beavers have been living in the district for more than ten years.

The district office does not have exact numbers.

But all potential areas are likely to be occupied, they say.

However, withdrawals are always individual reviews.

Means: "The fact that beavers are generally increasing is not enough." In the district, a removal was first allowed.

A beaver had established itself in a sewage treatment plant.
