Chairman of Torah Judaism and Minister of Housing Yitzhak Goldknopf announced today (Sunday) the cancellation of his participation in the official memorial ceremony at the military cemetery in Kiryat Gat, in which he was expected to participate and speak. This, due to the criticism leveled last week against the ultra-orthodox ministers and MKs who did not serve in the IDF. Later, it was learned that Deputy Minister Yaakov Tesler from the Agudath Israel faction is also expected to behave in this way.
"As a member of the government, I was supposed to take part in the Remembrance Day ceremony for the IDF martyrs, which will be held by the Yad Labanim organization in Kiryat Gat," said Goldknopf.
"I really wanted to come and honor the memory of the fallen. However, I came to know that besides the members of bereaved families who wanted my arrival as a representative of the government, there are bereaved families for whom this may cause discomfort. This is not true, but I prefer not to hurt their feelings. I do not wish to be used, God forbid , a reason for disrupting such a special and meaningful agenda. Therefore, during the ceremony we will go to the Western Wall, and there I will say chapters of the Psalms for the uplifting of the souls of the martyrs. I cherish the families and participate in their heavy mourning," he added.
The step came amid consultations held in the minister's environment, and following a petition signed last week by bereaved families in which they called on the Ministry of Defense to cancel the arrival of the ultra-Orthodox deputy minister.
"We strongly oppose the arrival of a person who did not serve in the army and refused to be photographed next to the Israeli flag to this sensitive position.

This morning, in the "HaModi" newspaper associated with Goldknopf, a call was published to the ultra-Orthodox public representatives in the government to refrain from coming to the ceremonies.
"Perhaps," the article states, "it would be more appropriate for the ultra-Orthodox representatives, on their own initiative, to contact the people in charge of the ceremonies and ask them to send other representatives to the cemeteries in their place this year. There is no point in going to a place from which we are rejected. The chapters of the Psalms and prayer for lifting up the soul - can take place even without an official presence in the ceremony," he added.
