MEP LR François-Xavier Bellamy defended on Sunday April 23 on
Radio J
the idea of a referendum on immigration, "
a major subject
", denouncing in passing the hypothesis of convening a citizens' convention on this subject.
"
Citizens' conventions
", like the one which recently ended on the end of life, "
are a way of devitalizing our institutions
", estimated the vice-president of LR.
"
If tomorrow we were to ensure that the law on immigration is built by a citizens' convention, it will have to be denounced forcefully
," he argued.
"
If the President of the Republic has the feeling that Parliament does not have enough strength to decide this immigration issue himself, he should resort to a referendum
", he continued, affirming that his “
political family
” would “
without problem
” support such an initiative.
Immigration, a “major subject”
Describing immigration as a "
major subject
", François-Xavier Bellamy gave an example of a question that the referendum could include: "
do the French want to create a residence permit for irregular immigration on condition that it corresponds to work needs inside our country?
I would say no
”.

According to the MEP, "
this government despises the need to protect our country against illegal immigration
": "
today the French government is more to the left than socialist governments in the European debate
" on the subject, he said. he rocks.
François-Xavier Bellamy also dismissed the idea of a "
coalition
" between LR and Emmanuel Macron, who only has a relative majority in the Assembly: "
I don't really see how we could find points of convergences
,” he said.
"
If tomorrow, when we are opponents of Emmanuel Macron (...), we were to become the auxiliaries of his majority in the process of collapse, we would still add to this mistrust and even to a form of disgust which has taken hold of the French in front of the permanent reversals of jackets
, ”he explained.
