A group of 26 Cuban migrants, including six minors, was detained on Friday upon disembarking in one of the Florida Keys after a trip made in a "homemade boat," according to authorities.
The 26 migrants were taken into the custody of the US Border Patrol (CBP, for its acronym in English), according to a report on social networks by Walter Slosar, head of the Miami sector of this federal agency.
The Cubans, 20 adults and six minors, made landfall on the Marquesas Keys, uninhabited islands west of Key West, the last of the string of islets in southern Florida linked by the US1 interstate highway.
Slosar did not provide further details on the health status of the migrants.
This Thursday, the US Coast Guard reported that the crew of the "William Trump" coast guard repatriated 30 Cubans after intercepting a group "off the Bahamas" earlier this week.
According to recent data from this agency, between April 7 and 14, 183 migrants were detained in seven interventions in the Straits of Florida and the Caribbean, a period in which 114 Cubans were repatriated.
Last January, the US government implemented a program that grants humanitarian visas to Cubans, Venezuelans, Haitians and Nicaraguans through a sponsor on US soil.
"Our agencies urge those considering the voyage dangerous to seek legal options," the Coast Guard said in a statement.
