US President
Joe Biden
announced Tuesday that
he will run for re-election in 2024
, entering, at 80, a fierce new campaign for the White House "to finish the job."
"Every generation has a moment where they have had to stand up for democracy. Stand up for your fundamental freedoms. I believe this is ours. That's why I'm running for re-election as President of the United States. Join us. Let's finish the job," Biden wrote in a Twitter message accompanied by a video.
As Clarín anticipated, there are strong chances that the fierce electoral battle of the last presidential elections will be repeated in November 2024, when
Biden faced Donald Trump
and defeated him, in elections whose results were rejected by the former president who denounced a fraud that was never proven.
Trump, 76, is for now
the favorite candidate of the Republicans
and has a great chance of being blessed among several of that party to fight again for the White House.
If Biden were re-elected,
he would take office at 82 and finish his term at 86
, making him the oldest president in US history.
The debate over his age and health will surely be a major campaign issue and all of his moves and speeches will come under heavy scrutiny.
It would be even more contrasting if his Republican challenger were someone much younger than Trump, like Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, 45, with school-age children.
Biden's decision had been suffering delays.
He said he would announce it at the end of the year and he didn't.
Other times he transcended the same thing, but nothing materialized.
There really wasn't much of a hurry to make his candidacy official: incumbent presidents tend to delay their announcements as long as possible in order to have a better electoral panorama and see how their rivals move.
But, in addition, Biden was seeking support because he faces skepticism even from members of his own party.
Only half of Democrats think he should run again in 2024, though most would support him if he became the nominee.
Why are you running for re-election?
Simply because he has not seen any other Democratic candidate to challenge him for leadership and, as Trump is emerging as his possible rival, it is thought that he is the best prepared to defeat him.
The Democrat, in addition, put last year's legislative election on the man and achieved a much better performance than expected, despite the fact that at that time the US had historical inflation.
