Tehran police have filed charges against two famous Iranian actresses after they appeared in public in Tehran without the compulsory veil, local media reported.

This announcement comes after the entry into force in mid-April of a new police plan to toughen the control of the wearing of the veil by women, compulsory since the Islamic Revolution of 1979.

In recent months, more and more women have appeared in the streets without veils, especially since the start of the protest movement in September, sparked by the death in custody of Mahsa Amini, arrested for breaching the strict dress code.

Last week, photos of Pantea Bahram posing bareheaded during a screening at a cinema in the capital went viral on social media.

Katayoun Riahi also posted many similar photos taken in public places in Tehran.

The 61-year-old actress was released on bail at the end of November after more than a week of detention for posting photos without a veil on her Instagram page in solidarity with the protesters.

She was the first Iranian actress to post such images on social media to support the protest movement.

The two actresses have been awarded several times at the Fajr festival in Tehran, the most important cinematographic event in the country.

On April 16, the authorities had indicated that more than 150 commercial establishments had been closed in 24 hours for not having respected the obligation of the wearing of the veil by employees.
