In Würzburg, it's all about the sausage: There should be no more meat at the port summer.

But there is now a strong headwind, opinions differ.

Würzburg – Würzburg in dispute: During the upcoming port summer from July 21 to August 6, 2023, there should only be vegetarian food.

An understandable step for the organizers, which they also justify with last year's consumption by the visitors - but for many others an affront.

Rags were flying in the town hall, there is disagreement on the streets.

Würzburg in the sausage dispute: Port summer is vegetarian - in the town hall the scraps fly

The Würzburg sausage dispute was the subject of the evening show at BR on April 25, which can also be found in the ARD media library.

The initial situation: Since 2022, after the Corona break, the port summer has been taking place again, including concerts, catering and hopefully summery weather.

And last year the city event was vegetarian - there was no meat, but fish instead.

This year there will only be vegetarian food.

The organizer, the culture department of the city of Würzburg, justifies this with the fact that in 2022 the demand for the vegetarian dishes was higher among the around 10,000 visitors.

In addition, according to the report by the Abendschau, the city administration wants to be climate-neutral by 2030.

However, the step towards vegetarian sausages at Hafensommer was not well received everywhere – especially not in the town hall itself.

It's about the sausage: CSU angry – "Where should the whole thing end?"

When it came to vegetarian food at the port summer, things got hot in the Würzburg town hall, according to the BR program.

In the person of Wolfgang Roth, the parliamentary group leader in the city council, the CSU is angry.

"Where is this supposed to end?

It's the harbor summer now, when there's only vegetarian food, do we continue in the canteen, in the town hall?

What about the folk festivals?

Will there only be vegetarian food on the Kiliani?” the CSU man continued.

Sandra Vorlová, leader of the Greens group in the city council, of course sees things differently.

Everyone has to decide for themselves how important the topic really is – in addition to climate change and overheating.

"Not for me personally," says Vorlová.

Vegetarian food as the only offer?

The topic boils up again and again - for example in schools and daycare centers.

“The opposite of re-education”: culture officer refers to trends among visitors

Divided opinions in the town hall - but also on the street.

When catching votes at the evening show in Würzburg, a passer-by was positively surprised by the taste of the vegetarian bratwurst, while another pedestrian stated that the bratwurst and the steak are part of a summer event.

The culture department is rather unaffected by the debate, saying there is no ban on meat, there will continue to be meat elsewhere in Würzburg – the step is “the opposite of re-education.

We pick up on the trends from our visitors and strengthen them," says Achim Könneke, the Würzburg culture officer.
