Guests prepare for the biggest fashion event and to honor the late designer Karl Lagerfeld at the most anticipated fashion event.

Karl Lagerfeld was a complicated man, which makes "honoring" his designs all the more challenging for this year's crop of Met Gala guests.

As celebrities line up for one of the biggest fashion events of the year, they'll have a narrow window in which to grab the red-carpet attention of the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Costume Institute's upcoming exhibit, "Karl Lagerfeld : a line of beauty".

Here's what we know about this year's Met Gala so far.

When is the Met Gala 2023?

The Costume Institute's 2023 annual benefit event, better known as the Met Gala, will take place on May 1, 2023 at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City.

Live coverage of the red carpet usually starts around 6pm, although celebrities are notorious for being late.

Who are this year's co-chairs?

On January 18, the Met announced that the evening's co-chairs will include actress and screenwriter Michaela Coel;

actress Penelope Cruz;

tennis star Roger Federer;

pop sensation Dua Lipa;

and, as always, Vogue Editor-in-Chief and Condé Nast Global CCO, Anna Wintour.

One notable observation: there are no designers included on this year's list of co-chairs.

What is the theme of the Met Gala 2023 and what does it mean?

Each year, the Met Gala's theme, or, dress code, is tied to the Costume Institute's spring exhibit.

This year's show is "Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty," honoring the late German designer's devotion to simple, "serpentine," and "satirical" lines in his collections for Chanel, Fendi, Chlóe, Balmain, Patou and his namesake brand from the 1950s to 2019. As such, the Met Gala dress code is simply "in honor of Karl," leaving interpretation open to guests.

Since the Met has also announced that both the exhibition and the Gala are being endorsed by Chanel, Fendi, and Karl Lagerfeld himself, you're likely to see plenty of celebrities dressed in those brands.

But we expect to see some more creative looks to "honor" Lagerfeld, and not the easy way out of wearing one of his designs.

Who is invited to the Met Gala 2023 and who will go?

In addition to the co-chairs, stars like Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck, Zendaya, Selena Gomez, Rihanna, Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds, the Hadid sisters, the Biebers, Zoë Kravitz, Kristen Stewart, Margot Robbie, Billie Eilish and, if we're lucky , Lady Gaga and Beyoncé, among many others.

Can I go to the Met Gala?

A better question might be, how rich and famous are you?

Even if you've earned enough notoriety to get one of the elusive invites, you'll need to spit out multiple digits to secure a ticket.

(Last year they cost $35,000 each, and tables cost between $200,000 and $300,000, according to the New York Times.)

That said, it's easy enough to enjoy the Met Gala from afar: the event's proceedings are always streaming online, and photos will be everywhere.
