Sushi: The traditional Japanese food has conquered the world for a long time.

But the popular dish is expensive - a cooking box company has therefore looked at the prices across Germany.

The result: two Bavarian cities made it into the top 3.

Munich/Nuremberg – German dishes are unimaginable without sushi.

With salmon, avocado or tuna - the Japanese treat is very popular.

As a quick snack on the street corner or as an expression of the highest Japanese culinary art and aesthetics in fine restaurants - sushi can now be found almost everywhere in the world.

But the dish is generally considered to be quite expensive.

The recipe box company HelloFresh has therefore made the price comparison.

How much does sushi cost in Germany?

To compare how much the prices differ, the company selected four popular types of sushi.

There are now many vegetarian alternatives.

Since the original Japanese form of sushi is based on fresh seafood or fish, HelloFresh has selected the following varieties:

  • Sashimi

: These are raw slices of fish.

Here the dish comes without rice or other ingredients - everything revolves around the pure, high-quality fish taste.

  • California Roll

    : In this variety, also

    called

    ura-maki

(in English: "rolled from the inside") or

    California maki

, the rice is attached to the outside of the nori sheet and often decorated with chives, black or white sesame seeds or small, colored fish eggs decorated.

California rolls contain crab meat, avocado and cucumber.

They do not belong to the traditional Maki - the origin is probably among Japanese Americans on the US Pacific coast.

  • Nigiri Maguro

    :

    Nigiri

sushi involves hand-squeezing the rice into a small roll, two fingers wide.

This type of sushi is topped with fish, seafood or omelets.

Sometimes nigiri are tied with a strip of nori.

    Maguro

    means tuna in English.

  • Inside Out Ebi Tempura

: This variety is just like the California Rolls Ura-Maki - rolled from the inside, or "inside out".

The deep-fried prawns, coated with rice on the outside, are a classic that is popular in many places.

In order to be able to determine an average price for the different cities, HelloFresh looked at at least ten menus.

Depending on availability, online menus from randomly selected restaurants in each city and/or prices from delivery services were selected, the company writes.

For the large Germany comparison, HelloFresh calculated the average price for each type of sushi and then added all four types.

With an average price of 9.74 euros, Munich takes first place. Hanover brings up the rear – here sushi only costs 5.65 euros.

Horrendous sushi prices: no other city is as expensive as Munich

The result: nowhere else does sushi cost as much as in Munich.

Almost ten euros are due for a total of four pieces of sushi in the Bavarian state capital.

For comparison: in Hanover the price is more than four euros lower.

Depending on how hungry you are, you quickly have to reckon with more than 30 euros per person in Munich.

In the Ruhr area and Hanover you can eat sushi

almost twice

!

The regional price differences are particularly evident for the type of sashimi examined.

For a slice of sashimi shake (salmon) you pay 2.69 euros in Munich.

In Dresden, Duisburg, Dortmund, Cologne and Hanover, the fish costs more than a euro less.

Sushi statistics: Nuremberg also ends up on the “sad” podium

With a gap of 1.09 euros, Nuremberg is in third place – just behind Düsseldorf.

At Nigiri Maguro, the result is surprising: "Nuremberg is now among the most expensive cities for sushi," writes HelloFresh.

Nowhere else does a nigiri with tuna cost more than 4.50 euros as much as in Nuremberg.

Munich follows closely in this category – only in the Bavarian cities are prices over 4 euros charged for a nigiri.

In Duisburg, customers get

almost three times as much

for their money.

It is important for the Kochbox company to make it clear: “The price says nothing about the quality of the sushi!

But he decides how often, how much and how much we like to eat sushi, if it is good!”
