Relaxing on deck in the sun, enjoying the view of the sea and taking a trip to the country in between - this is how many travelers imagine a cruise.

But as everywhere else, there are different rules on the ship that vacationers should follow to ensure a pleasant trip for everyone.

If you don't do this, you sometimes have to leave the ship faster than you would like.

According to the online portal

US Today

, cruise expert and travel journalist Erica Silverstein has summarized a variety of reasons why travelers have to disembark.

These are the three most important:

Cruise-Off: Missing or Incorrect Documents

As a rule, it is not the intention of the vacationer, but missing or incorrect documents can mean a quick end to the trip, as Silverstein reports.

Cruise lines would have to follow official travel document regulations, so again, there are no exceptions for forgetful guests.

In some cases it is possible to get a group visa and save the trip for the person concerned, but there is no guarantee.

"If you're responsible for making sure your papers are in order and you're not, the only thing the cruise staff can do is throw you out the door," she concludes.

Rude behavior means a quick end to the trip

Probably not surprising, but still worth mentioning: Anyone who behaves badly on board, lashes out, throws objects over the railing or is rude to the staff will very quickly be thrown off the ship.

That's not just true for adults, but also for teenagers and children, as Silverstein notes.

All cruise lines have a code of conduct - and passengers agree to comply with it when they sign the contract for the voyage.

"If you misbehave on board, the cruise lines reserve the right to end your cruise on the spot," said the expert.

Infectious diseases and health problems

Of course it's annoying when you get sick while traveling.

But anyone suffering from a norovirus or other contagious diseases will be quarantined on board for better or worse.

It is important that passengers comply with these - non-compliance may result in a warning from ship staff.

The last resort is that they have to disembark, as Silverstein explains.

Not to forget passengers who suffer a heart attack, stroke or serious injury.

In the event of health emergencies that cannot be adequately treated by the medical facilities on board, the affected guests must also leave the ship.

They'll disembark at the nearest port and take them to the nearest hospital, even though they may not feel comfortable with the thought: "It doesn't have to be the best hospital, and you may not speak the local language, but if you're that sick or injured that requires immediate surgery, you'll be disembarked faster than you can say 'liability,'" says Silverstein.
