At a time when a thousand Mahorais are gathered in Mamoudzou to renew their support for the Wuambushu security operation, the French in mainland France are expressing the same support.
In a survey carried out by Toluna Harris Interactive for LCI and published on April 28, three out of four French people say they are in favor of the operation carried out to dislodge irregular migrants in Mayotte.
Among them, more than a third (37%) say they are very in favor of it.
Those over 65 are at the forefront of support: 87% of them are in favor of this series of police interventions launched by the Minister of the Interior Gérald Darmanin on April 24.
The objective, to put a stop to delinquency and illegal immigration in the 101st French department.
LFI supporters mostly in favor
If the sympathizers of the center and right are more pronounced than the average in favor of this operation, those on the left are also mostly favorable.
68% of PS sympathizers and 65% of EELV sympathizers support the anti-migrant operation.
On the LFI side, 59% are also in favor of the police intervention, which several associations have denounced as “
brutal
”, “
anti-poor
” and violating the rights of migrants.
Behind this unanimity, the effectiveness of the operation is nevertheless perceived in a more mixed way.
Just over half of French people only believe that it will be effective in fighting crime (58%) or illegal immigration (53%) in Mayotte.
The arrival of illegal immigrants, particularly from neighboring Comoros, is an old problem on the island.
Of the estimated 350,000 inhabitants of Mayotte, half do not have French nationality.
