Which city in Germany has the best public transport?

A travel portal has now published a ranking - three cities from Bavaria are in the top 10.

Nuremberg – The 49-euro ticket will be valid in Germany from May 1st.

The ambiguity as to which ticket you need for which route is over (you can find questions and answers about the Germany ticket here).

On the occasion of the forthcoming launch of the 49-euro ticket, the travel portal Tripz looked at public transport in the 25 most populous cities in Germany - and a Franconian city is right at the top.

Public transport ranking in Germany

The maximum number of points is 70 points

Three categories were examined:

1. Number of public transport means (e.g. subway and S-Bahn, tram or ferry)

2. Total number of lines within the city

3. Speed in relation to the size of the city in square kilometers (between the northernmost and southernmost stops, between the westernmost and easternmost stops and the number of transfers to reach the destination)

Ranking of public transport in Germany: Hanover and Karlsruhe win - Nuremberg in second place

Hanover and Karlsruhe share first place in the ranking with 61 points each, and according to the travel portal, the two cities offer the best public transport in Germany.

There were particularly high points for the speed and the low number of transfers.

Directly behind in second place is Nuremberg.

The Franconian city scores in Tripz's Germany ranking above all for its speed to get across the city.

It takes around 121 minutes to get from north to south and around 60 minutes from east to west.

In relation to the size of the city (around 187 square kilometers), Nuremberg can therefore score points.

  • 3rd place: Bonn

  • 4th place: Stuttgart

  • 5th place: Mannheim

  • 6th place: Augsburg

"Absolutely outstanding": Nuremberg takes second place in the Germany-wide public transport ranking

With Augsburg in 6th place and Munich in 9th place, there are other Bavarian cities in the top 10 alongside Nuremberg. But is Nuremberg's outstanding position appropriate?

The many points for speed are due to the subway, as Lukas Iffländer from the PRO BAHN passenger association explained to

infranken.de

.

"For the size of the city, the Nuremberg subway is absolutely outstanding."

The situation is different with the tram.

In the Franconian metropolis, the trams would have to share the road with the cars, which is why there were more delays, Iffländer continued.

For the expert, the question of how often the lines run and whether there are actually delays is much more important than the number of lines, which play a major role in the ranking.
