Again and again there is a discussion on the Internet about whether passengers can simply lean back in their seats - after all, others could feel disturbed.

That's what an ex-flight attendant says.

The question of whether it's rude to simply recline your seat on an airplane has long been a controversy.

A survey of Americans by the US opinion research institute SurveyMonkey revealed that around two-thirds of those surveyed are annoyed when the person in front folds the seat back completely backwards.

About 30 percent find it impolite, but would do it themselves if they asked permission first.

If you don't do this, you can quickly face the anger of your fellow travelers.

A woman recently reported on a forum that she kicked a passenger in the seat when she used the recline function without comment.

So the topic offers a lot of explosives – an ex-flight attendant also felt it when she expressed her opinion on the subject.

In a TikTok video, she explained what etiquette air travelers should familiarize themselves with on board.

Flight expert explains: Can the backrest on the plane simply be folded back?

"As a person who used to work in flight reservations, then as a flight attendant, and now as a business traveler who has traveled the world 100 days a year for the past ten years, I consider myself one of the foremost experts on airplane and airport etiquette," TikToker Belle Valise begins her video.

With her knowledge, she finally wants to put an end to the discussion about the backrest.

Sleeping on a plane with the seat back reclined is tempting for many.

But that doesn't always go down well.

But what she has to say will probably not please everyone: "When you buy a seat on an airplane, you are entitled to the full functionality of that seat," says the travel expert.

This means that everyone has the right to use their backrest - even if someone very tall is sitting in the seat behind, who may be restricted as a result.

"I've never understood that": Annoyance and relief among users

This statement causes dissatisfaction with some users: “I had a very tall father and have a tall son.

It's good to know that only one of the two parties has to make adjustments," says one person, for example.

The following user has a similar view: "What I hear: A little more comfort for me is more important than someone else's discomfort." Another person also notes that eating meals with a reclined chair is hardly possible: "I'm annoying me about the design of the seats because they recline so far that sometimes I can't even use the table that I'm entitled to."

But there are also some users who see themselves confirmed by the video - and are happy that there is finally plain text: "I've always been confused when people say that it's rude to sit back because it's literally a function of the Seat is!” Says a user.

Or, "I've never understood that...there's a reason to sit back.

I'm not tall, but I recline because it's more comfortable.

It has never bothered me when someone leans back.”

From the travel expert's point of view, passengers can use their backrests at any time.

However, the numerous outraged reactions also show that it doesn't hurt to ask the person behind you beforehand - at least if you don't want to arouse the anger of your fellow passengers.

One user sums it up well: "You can certainly lean back, but be aware of your surroundings and if you have a tall person behind you, don't lean too far back.

Just be nice.”
