According to the Belgian public prosecutor, the large-scale operation on Wednesday against the Calabrian 'Ndrangheta was directed against more than a hundred suspected members of the mafia organization.

According to the public prosecutor's office in Brussels, there were around 150 house searches in eight countries.

In Belgium, there were 25 raids, mainly in the northern Belgian region of Flanders, and 13 arrests.

Further police operations were carried out in Germany, Italy, France, Spain and Portugal, Slovenia and Romania.

In Germany, residential and business premises were searched in numerous places, and more than 30 arrest warrants were executed.

The searches and arrests were part of Operation Eureka - according to Herrmann, one of the most important cases against Italian organized crime in recent years.

Investigators from Italy, Germany, Belgium, France, Portugal and Spain were involved.

In addition to numerous arrests, several kilos of marijuana, electronic data carriers and documents were secured during the raid.

More than 1,000 officers were deployed across Germany, including special forces.

Investigators from the Organized Crime Department of the Saarland State Police Headquarters are currently searching the home and business premises of a 47-year-old man in Saarbrücken, as well as premises he has rented in Saarlouis.

The man wanted with an arrest warrant was not found there, but was caught as part of the joint measures in Italy.

Another 25-year-old from Saarland, who was wanted with an arrest warrant, was also caught in Italy.

Around 90 emergency services are involved in the measures, including special units and the riot police.

The searches serve to find evidence.

The investigations, in particular the evaluation of the evidence found, are ongoing.

The accused are presumed innocent until a final conviction.
