A 29-year-old man, a resident of East Jerusalem, was arrested yesterday (Thursday) on suspicion of setting fire to a Koran and attacking a woman.

According to the suspicion, the young man was invited to her house by her family members, to perform a kind of ritual to remove a spell.

During the ceremony, the young woman tried to escape from them, but the suspect caught her while slamming her head into the car.

His detention was extended by four days.

At the beginning of the hearing on the extension of his detention that took place this morning at the Jerusalem Magistrate's Court, the police representative said: "Tonight, the suspect arrived together with the mother of a young girl and several other people at the house, where the same girl was together with her brother and sister. They began to perform some kind of ritual during which they set fire and burned things At home, including a Koran and toys."

"They asked the girl and her brother to accompany them. At some point while they were in the car, that girl saw her manager, tried to get out of the car to reach him, the suspect went after her, caught her and attacked her by hitting her head in the car, and put her in the car with the help of other people, when they drove to her mother's house in Ein Nekova (Jerusalem mountains - SH), and continue this ceremony," he added.

"After the ceremony, she contacted the police and they arrived at the scene. They arrested the suspect, he was interrogated, and basically admitted that he came to the house of that girl who lives with her father in order to watch over them. When he was asked to explain why in the middle of the night he comes to a house that is not his and enters to him without permission, when he tries to perform some religious ceremony, he did not know how to explain and maintained his right to remain silent," claimed the police representative.

According to him, "There is a reason for arrest of dangerousness which stems both from the nature of the event and from the fact that there is more hidden than visible in it. We are trying to find out what the purpose was in this ceremony and in arriving at the place. We constantly see harm to women."

According to his defense attorney, "It reaches too far and to distant districts. The respondent makes a very simple claim, he was invited by the girl's brother, because that person told him that the girl wanted to leave the house and move in with her mother. He was asked to come along with the mother in order to transfer her to the mother's new place of residence. He vehemently denies that he assaulted her. Furthermore, regarding the same ceremony in question, the respondent was not part of that matter, and has no connection. He was invited by others. What was burned, I also do not know if it is a Koran , it does not amount to the offense of malicious damage. This is an event with a very low bar. There are strange elements here, but from here to the extension of the detention is a long way."
