In the midst of a diplomatic crisis between Paris and Rome, the head of the Italian government Giorgia Meloni has decided to "
freeze
" her visit to France scheduled for the next month, indicates the Italian daily
La Stampa
.
A decision that comes as his Minister of Foreign Affairs, Antonio Tajani, has already canceled Thursday the meeting scheduled for the same evening with his French counterpart Catherine Colonna in Paris.
A visit which was, precisely, to prepare the upcoming arrival of Giorgia Meloni at the Élysée.
The wrath of the Italian executive comes in reaction to the remarks of the French Minister of the Interior Thursday morning on RMC.
Gérald Darmanin, reacting to remarks by the president of the National Rally (RN) Jordan Bardella concerning the migratory situation at the Franco-Italian border, said that he judged the Italian Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni, "unable to resolve the migratory problems"
of
the Italy, which is experiencing record arrivals via the Mediterranean.
"
Madame Meloni, the far-right government chosen by the friends of Ms. (Marine) Le Pen, is unable to resolve the migration issues on which she was elected
," said the minister on RMC.
The right-wing nationalist leader's visit to France, scheduled for late May or early June, had been in the works since a two-hour conversation last March between Emmanuel Macron and Giorgia Meloni in a hotel room in Brussels, on the sidelines of the last European Council.
"
Now (the project) is at least frozen
," says
La Stampa
.
Last October, Emmanuel Macron was the first foreign leader to meet the new President of the Council in Rome.
The Head of State had undertaken to work with the right-wing nationalist personality with “
ambition
” but also with “
vigilance
”.
