Chris Pratt and James Gunn speak with Clarín del dulce de leche, Guardians of the Galaxy and Victoria Alonso

2023-05-05T09:58:10.721Z

Actor and director told why the Marvel saga ends and what song they couldn't include. And Chris talks about 'Super Mario Bros.'.

It is noticeable from a distance -the distance provided by the netbook screen, where we connect via Zoom with them- that they get along great, and they understand each other and joke as if they were lifelong friends.

Chris Pratt

, son-in-law of Arnold Schwarzenegger, and

James Gunn

, star and director of all three

Guardians of the Galaxy

Volumes , may not be working together again.

It is that

Volume 3

that premiered on Thursday is the closure of the trilogy, and Gunn is already the boss of DC, the counter to Marvel.

Despite being temporarily kicked out of the film amid backlash to inappropriate jokes the director tweeted a decade ago, Disney and Marvel brought

James Gunn

back to finish his trilogy.

And now, the man thinks more about Superman and Batman than about Star-Lord, Groot or Gamora, some of the Guardians he said goodbye to.

James Gunn is now the boss of DC, the counter to Marvel in cinema, and Chris Pratt congratulates the Argentines.

Because?

They are in Los Angeles ready to answer everything.

They do not evade any question.

They talked about the film, but also about dulce de leche and

Victoria Alonso

, the Argentine who worked side by side with them at Marvel, until she was fired.

We ask Gunn, who took over DC, if he's taking Alonso with him.

Pratt also talked about

Super Mario Bros.

, the animated hit in which he voiced Mario.

-First of all, I want to thank you for the film, because it really lives like a party.

James Gunn:

-Oh, thanks.

-What do you know about Argentina?

James, you were at the Mar del Plata Film Festival many years ago.

James Gunn:

-That's right!

There's a reason this is the film that closes the trilogy of Star-Lord, Groot, Drax and the other Guardians.

-And Chris, have you tried the dulce de leche?

Chris Pratt:

-Yes, it's delicious.

James Gunn:

-I entered his room last night.

We were hanging out, and then we were supposed to go out, but he passed out in the corner.

He was with a spoon and all the dulce de leche spilled on his body, and all the underwear with dulce de leche...

Chris Pratt:

-Yes.

No, actually, I think it's a dream you had.

James Gunn:

-Oh, that was a fantasy.

Chris Pratt:

-He was covered in dulce de leche, and naked…

James Gunn:

-Very good.

Chris Pratt:

-This is published?

-Yes Yes Yes…

James Gunn:

-Oh, okay.

I'm sorry.

Chris Pratt:

-Only serious answers.

The dulce de leche is delicious.

And I am very proud of you (for the Argentines), what a great year.

The World Cup, what a fantastic moment.

It was amazing to see that.

-Thank you so much…

Chris Pratt:

-Messi is God.

-James, when you told Marvel that you wanted to explore more about Rocket and his friends, in the past, to see where the raccoon came from, was there any kind of resistance?

James Gunn:

-No, not at all.

In fact, the only thing that happened was that after

Guardians 2

I was asked a question about whether I was going to make a Rocket and Groot movie, and tell the story that way, or do it as a Guardians

3

movie .

And they were very happy that I decided to make it as a

Guardians 3

movie , because that's what they wanted.

But to be able to tell that story with the whole group as part of it, it was great.

Chris Pratt was fanaticized with the Argentine National Team.

The songs

-When I interviewed you for “Peacemaker”, you told me that you wrote the scripts already with the songs in mind.

Was this like this in this “Volume 3” as well?

James Gunn:

-Yes, the three

Volumes

have been like that.

That's how I write in everything I wrote, like in

The Suicide Squad

.

I write the music in the script.

I think of it like baking a cake.

You bake a cake and butter the mixture, right?

How do you make a cake?

I guess it has butter... You butter the mixture, and then serve the cake, instead of making the cake and then spreading the butter on top.

And a lot of movies, they just release the songs afterwards.

And it doesn't have that organic feeling, you know?

I like that the movies are an integral part of the songs along with what we are seeing and listening to in another way.

The songs of the three films have their reason.

James Gunn includes them when he writes the script.

"It's like baking a cake", he tries to explain to "Clarín".

-Is there a song that you didn't include in any of the three movies, and you would have liked to include it in this “Volume 3”?

James Gunn:

-There are tons of songs that I always have on a list that I would like to use in a

Guardians

movie .

And obviously I didn't get to most of them.

There are hundreds of songs on this list, but there is one song sung by a band, The Lords of the New Church, called

Russian Roulette

, that I wanted to use in this movie.

And it's the only song I didn't get the rights to in all three movies, because there are legal disputes over who owns the song.

And so, you know, technically we had no way of getting it.

Apart from that, we fought very hard to get some songs.

It was very difficult to get

Mr. Blue Sky

(from Electric Light Orchestra) in the second movie.

And we fought hard and we got it.

And there were other really tough battles.

Even the Beastie Boys gave us their song (

No Sleep Till Brooklyn

) to use on the soundtrack, although they don't usually do that.

But they like the Guardians movies, and we're happy to have her.

Zoe Saldana as Gamora.

But hadn't Star-Lord's girlfriend died?

-Why is this the film that closes the saga?

James Gunn:

Well, I think it's just a matter of… From the beginning, I think I had an idea of what the core stories were for, for Rocket, for Peter Quill, for Nebula and Drax.

And to be able to tell this third film, it felt like now was the time we could tell that story.

It's almost like I've been waiting for my moment to tell the one about Rocket, and where it came from.

And that fits perfectly into Peter's story, because it's all about compassion.

It's about accepting who we are, accepting our own flaws, and seeing the beauty in those flaws.

Is Victoria Alonso being taken to DC?

Victoria Alonso is no longer at Marvel.

"I love working with her," James Gunn recounted.

And also, that Argentina sings... horrible.

-James, you know I'm from Argentina, and a month ago Victoria Alonso told me that she was very excited about the outcome of “Guardians of the Galaxy 3”.

Did you regularly talk to her before, during and after filming?

James Gunn:

-I just spoke to her the other day, so we had a conversation, and it was a really warm and beautiful talk.

She's not in Marvel, but she just wanted to tell me how much she loves this movie, and I think she loved working with me, and I love working with her.

So I'm very happy to have had that friendship over the years.

She sings a lot.

I don't know if you know this about Victoria.

She sings really loud in the editing room, and it's horrible singing, but it's also really funny.

So I'm going to miss Victoria very much.

"(The film) is about accepting who we are, accepting our own flaws and seeing the beauty in those flaws," says the "Suicide Squad" director.

-Now that she lost her job, are you going to take her to DC?

-I think Victoria has many other plans for the things she wants to do.

I'm not sure she wants to spend another ten or fifteen years making superhero movies.

But, you know, she's always welcome to come and stop by.

-Chris, this may be the last time you'll be with James.

Are you going to miss him or what?

Chris Pratt:

-Oh, God, no.

James Gunn:

-Haha.

Chris Pratt, on his friend James Gunn, now in DC: "He, as hard as he tries, he can't get rid of me."

Are common projects coming up in DC?

AP Photo

Chris Pratt:

-It is published, it is published… Correct.

Yes of course.

I will miss being together in the filming process and, God willing, we will do something together again.

We both have a long way to go and we can work on something later.

It's been a lot of fun spending time with him in a professional sense, because we have a lot of fun when we don't need to be there working.

And with movies, there's a lot of time to kill, just, and we do it with humor and making fun of each other and having fun and laughing.

I will miss that.

But I also know that we are just a phone call or text away.

We live in the same city, while he does his work in DC, we're only minutes away from each other, so that's great.

And he, no matter how hard he tries, can't get rid of me.

Very sorry.

You're in it for the long haul.

James Gunn:

-Mmmh... So I'll say I'll miss you too.

Pratt's advice to the Argentine public: "Always be attentive to the post-credits sequences, that gives you a clue of what is to come...".

-I am one of the fans who stays until the end of the titles, and there is a legend that says...

Chris Pratt:

-This is kind of a spoiler.

You wouldn't put that.

No, you will not.

You won't put that anywhere.

Okay, yes.

I would say to your readers, “If you are curious about the fate of the characters, should any of them survive the movie?

Always keep an eye out for the post-credits sequences, because that gives you a hint of things to come.

And this has some post-credits sequences.”

-What a great year you are having right now.

The success of “Super Mario Bros.”

and "Guardians" is added.

Is there anything in particular that you remember about the voice recording process for the animated film?

Or "Guardians"?

-Oh man.

I mean, I was doing

Mario

and

Guardians

at the same time.

She would have time off from

Guardians

, and would go do

Mario

.

Mario

was a couple year process, maybe a recording session a month or so for a couple of years.

Yeah, it was definitely a different process.

Pratt provided the voice of Mario in "Super Mario Bros.: The Movie."

"I'm very proud of 'Super Mario Bros.', it's fantastic and has a great future."

AFP photo

Putting the voice for a movie, as well as being the voice, the face and the body and doing that job of acting in a movie.

They're two different ballgames, for sure.

I'm very proud of

Super Mario Bros.

, I think it's fantastic, I think it has a great future and I'm so impressed by the worldwide response, it's been a huge movie.

It took me by surprise, I was hoping people would love it, and when I saw the movie, I knew it was really good, so I was hoping people would talk about it when it came out.

But it was a bit of a surprise, because, you know, I did maybe 30 shoots over the course of a couple of years while they animated the movie with something parallel like

Guardians

, where I'm there every day for, whatever, 90 days doing a movie.

There I am seeing everything, I know how it will look.

And the process of sitting down and watching that movie and its completion, both of which are really fantastic, but they're definitely two different games.
