An Iraqi resident in Belgium since 2015 was arrested on Wednesday and charged with "
participation in the activities of a terrorist group
" and "
war crimes
" for his alleged role in attacks in Baghdad in 2009 and 2010.
Refugee status in Belgium
This person, born in 1979, is suspected of having been part of a terrorist cell belonging to Al-Qaeda, "
partly responsible for several bomb attacks
" in the green zone in 2009 and 2010 which caused at least 376 dead and more than 2,300 injured, the Belgian federal prosecutor's office said on Friday.
These attacks were allegedly committed using car bombs against, in particular, several government buildings, he added.
This Iraqi, who had obtained refugee status in Belgium, was arrested following a search carried out in Hasselt (east) on the orders of an investigating judge specializing in terrorism cases.
He will appear on Friday before the Mechelen council chamber, which will decide whether or not to keep him in detention.
