The United Kingdom crowns its new King Charles III in a ceremony with ancient traditions

2023-05-06T22:10:50.990Z

"God save the king!", they chanted in Westminster Abbey after placing the crown of Saint Edward on the head of Carlos III, seated on a centuries-old throne. All the details of a celebration full of symbolism and luxuries, and with some modern touches.

Newsroom Telemundo

Carlos III automatically ascended to the British throne when Elizabeth II died on September 8, but this Saturday the ceremony of millennial traditions was held in London that confirmed him as head of state and the Church of England.

The coronation has deeply religious origins and full of symbols.

We explain all the details of how it was live from London.

The keys to the coronation, a ceremony of pomp and ancient traditions

King Charles III was crowned monarch of the United Kingdom on Saturday, in a ceremony steeped in age-old rites and pomp.

Shouts of “God save the king!”

trumpets blared and gun salutes rang out after the Archbishop of Canterbury placed the crown on Charles' head in Westminster Abbey.

The first coronation rite was the oath: Charles of England swore before the Bible to fulfill his duties as a monarch.

As the Archbishop of Canterbury read the precepts, the King responded, "I will."

There were other traditional moments.

One moment of the ceremony that had a touch of mystery was when, using mobile screens, soldiers formed the cubicle within which the royal anointing occurred.

There, the monarch was stripped of his royal insignia to be consecrated.

The fascinating history of the central gem of the King's Imperial crown (which comes from Spain)

May 6, 202302:09

After Charles III's coronation, his wife, Camilla Parker-Bowles, received a crown that belonged to Queen Mary of Teck.

It is about a relationship that received the blessing of Isabel II before she died but that began marked by the scandal of an infidelity.

Kings Charles and Camilla then returned to Buckingham Palace in a sumptuous procession enlivened by the crowds lining the streets.

The couple and other family members, including Prince William and Kate, the Princess of Wales and their three children appeared on the palace balcony and waved to a flag-waving crowd below them.

However, not everyone is a fan of King Charles and the royals, and dozens of anti-monarchy activists and other protesters were arrested on Saturday.

The jewels of the British crown were protagonists in a coronation that had not happened in 70 years.

At the ceremony, the two crowns worn by Carlos III stood out: that of San Eduardo —the oldest in the monarchy— and that of the Imperial State, with which the king greeted the public from the balcony.

The 74-year-old Charles's coronation comes nearly eight months after he ascended the throne following the death of his mother, Queen Elizabeth II, on Sept. 8.

Why Carlos's coronation was much more expensive than his mother's (but produces more money)

May 6, 202300:42

Born in 1948, the king was invested as Prince of Wales in 1969 and married Lady Diana in 1981, a marriage that was dissolved in 1996. In 2005, after years of controversy, he married Camilla Parker-Bowles in a civil ceremony .

Contrary to popular belief, coronations in the United Kingdom are not planned by the royal family but by the Duchy of Norfolk, which, curiously, is a Catholic family in a country where the Anglican Church is the majority.

This was organized by the XVIII Duke of these British nobles.

Dozens of people were arrested near where Carlos III was crowned

Dozens of anti-monarchy activists and other protesters were arrested on Saturday, a reminder that not everyone in the UK has been swept up in the royal adulation that dominates television screens.

Six people from the anti-monarchy group Republic and 19 people from environmental activists Just Stop Oil were detained by the Metropolitan Police in central London near where Charles was crowned, according to the groups.

For free speech advocates and some viewers,

it was a chilling scene

, even on a day when polls and anecdotes suggest that apathy, rather than royal or anti-monarchical fervor, is the prevailing mood in Britain. .

The coronation of the king generates apathy and criticism in the former colonies

Before King Charles III's coronation, territories like the Bahamas, South Africa, Tuvalu and beyond planned to have soldiers marching with flags to honor the king and country.

For some, it is an affirmation of the friendship between Great Britain and its former colonies.

But to many others in the Commonwealth of Nations, Charles' coronation is viewed with apathy at best.

Most of the 56 member nations are former colonies of the British Empire.

What is the Commonwealth of Nations, the group of States where in many Carlos is still the king

May 6, 202301:15

In those countries, the coronation is an occasion to remember the painful and bloody past of colonialism.

In the Caribbean especially, the spectacular display of pageantry in London will clash with growing calls to break all ties with the monarchy.

"Interest in British royalty has waned as more Jamaicans are waking up to the reality that survivors of slavery's colonialism and holocaust have yet to receive restorative justice," the Rev. Sean told The Associated Press. Major-Campbell, an Anglican priest in the Jamaican capital, Kingston.

The coronation “is only relevant to the extent that

it kicks us in the face

with the reality that our head of state is head of state simply by virtue of biology,” Major-Campbell added.

Could royal drama ruin the new monarch's celebration?

After the coronation, King Carlos will have to overcome scandals and complicated family relationships that could tarnish his reign and the monarchy itself.

The dates, the first times and the controversies that have marked the life of the king

May 6, 202302:09

Past and current problems with Prince Andrew, Prince Harry, Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex and even his wife, Camilla, could overshadow the new king's rule if not handled carefully, royal experts say.

“The royal family is one of the more visible and subdued aspects of the overall brand of the crown,” said Cele Otnes, co-author of

Royal Fever: The British Monarchy in Consumer Culture.

to NBC News, sister network of Noticias Telemundo.

“It's hard to manage people,” she added.

First on the list of people to be checked is the King's younger brother, Prince Andrew, the Duke of York, who has been plagued by sexual abuse allegations related to his long association with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein and his confidant, British

socialite

Ghislaine Maxwell, who was found guilty of child sex trafficking in 2021.

Carlos' ability to keep a tight rein on his younger brother is essential if he is to maintain the respect of the British public, David Haigh, chief executive of Brand Finance, a London-based consultancy firm, told NBC News.

Since they were little, their children face very hard situations: Carlos's relationship with William and Harry

May 6, 202303:31

Andrew is not the only prince who has been a source of controversy in the royal family in recent years.

So has Prince Harry, Charles's youngest son.

Harry and his wife, Meghan, stepped down as working royals on January 8, 2020. The couple, now relocated to California, have given a series of high-octane interviews explaining their move and taking aim at the monarchy. and the country's tabloid press.

But Charles and Harry's complicated relationship may have improved the new monarch's reputation, according to Haigh.

"I think there are a number of people who are sympathetic to King Charles for Harry's situation and his handling of it," he said.

"Prince Harry is on the sidelines, throwing bricks, and King Charles tries very hard to keep an olive branch," he added.

Prince Louis is bored at the ceremony (just like Carlos himself at his age)

During the coronation ceremony, Prince Louis, who just turned 5, seemed to let out a big yawn as he sat with his parents and sister on the benches of Westminster Abbey.

As Prince William, Princess Charlotte and the former Kate Middleton are seen reviewing the brochures in front of them, Louis looks up and yawns during the run-up to Charles's official coronation as king, part of a two-hour-long ceremony. .

But he's likely far from the first royal child to do so during the long, formal occasion.

"Parasite king": protests are also present in London

The anti-monarchist group República claimed that several of its members were arrested when they were preparing to protest the coronation of King Carlos III.

Their plan was to hold banners and sing "Not My King" during the monarch's procession to Westminster Abbey.

On Saturday morning, several of the group's members were stopped near Trafalgar Square and taken to police vans.

Others managed to protest along the route, dressed in yellow and waving banners with slogans including “parasite king” and “abolish the monarchy”.

Police had said they would have a "low tolerance" for people seeking to disrupt the day's ceremonies, drawing criticism that they are cracking down on free speech.

Environmental activist group Just Stop Oil also said around 20 of its supporters were arrested on Saturday for protesting during coronation celebrations.

The group, which is demanding that no new licenses be granted for fossil fuel projects in the UK, said protesters were arrested at the shopping center opposite Buckingham Palace and outside Downing Street.

The activists did not carry out disruptive actions, they said, but only wore T-shirts and flags that read "Just enough oil." The group criticized the British government for banning legitimate dissent.

About 150 Cavalier King Charles Spaniel dogs parade in London

By Yuliya Talmazan -

NBC News

Around 150 Cavalier King Charles Spaniels, some wearing royal tiaras, will march down one of London's most historic streets to commemorate the coronation.

"Forget British weather," said Bradley, 51, as it rained heavily outside.

“It is once in a lifetime, it makes history… To celebrate the king and his coronation.

I can't think of a better way to spend the day, being honest with you, than to do it with friends," he added.

Several took place during the 2022 jubilee celebrations for the late Queen Elizabeth II, the largest held at a long table at Windsor Castle that was almost 900 yards long.

The return to Buckingham Palace, meanwhile, will be the traditional one used in all coronations since 1831: the State Gold Carriage.

Unlike the previous one, it is drawn by eight horses and is seven meters long.

It was commissioned in 1760 by King George III.

Contrary to what its name suggests, it is actually made of wood, albeit covered in thin layers of gold leaf.

The route will be much shorter than that of Queen Elizabeth II.

Camilla receives her crown, without the controversial Kohinoor diamond

Queen Camilla received the crown from Queen Mary, albeit without the controversial Kohinoor diamond, one of the largest in the world.

The Kohinoor was one of the many plunders of British imperialism and over time, it became part of the crown jewels.

It was placed on a crown last worn by Charles's grandmother, the Queen Mother, during her coronation.

India and Pakistan have long been demanding their return.

Now, the crown that Camilla wears has been modified and she will wear, instead of Kohinoor, the Cullinan III, IV and V diamonds, in tribute to the late Queen Elizabeth, Buckingham Palace has reported.

Chantal Da Silva - NBC News

Carlos III and Camilla were married on April 9, 2005, having had a long-term extramarital affair while Carlos was still married to Princess Diana.

Their marriage was also a unique event, as it involved the heir to the throne marrying a divorcee, something previously taboo.

Crucially, Camilla seemed to have won the support of the late queen.

In 2022, Elizabeth made it clear that Camilla should be queen consort upon Charles' accession.

And in recent weeks, it has been confirmed that she would simply be titled Queen Camilla.

For this reason Camilla is no longer called 'queen consort' (but not Prince Philip)

Public viewing areas along the coronation route will be open from 6 am (1 am ET).

In the morning, the procession will travel from Buckingham Palace to the abbey in an estimated 35-minute journey.

The two-hour service begins at 11 a.m. (7 a.m. ET).

It is a somber and symbolic ceremony, virtually unchanged in a millennium, in which Charles will assume the role of sovereign.

Then, at around 1 pm local (9 am ET), the coronation procession leaves Westminster Abbey, and the Abbey bells will ring.

The celebration flights will be at 2:30 pm (10:30 am).

The two met in February at a meeting on biodiversity at Buckingham Palace in England.

Peas gave the king a seed necklace, a vase and a bracelet that Carlos III wore in his first royal portrait.

"He said we are going to start with a pilot project, with half a million dollars, if this goes well, we want to triple or multiply to work in all of the Amazon," the indigenous leader told Telemundo News.

Among the projects promoted by the king, there is a school to educate young environmental leaders in defense of the forest and another bioeconomy to generate income for indigenous communities.
