Severe weather alarm in Germany: Thunderstorms, hail, storms - which regions are affected

First report from May 5, 2023:

Munich – At the weekend it will be stormy and wet in many regions of Germany.

Several weather services such as

wetter.net

and the German Weather Service (DWD) predict gusts, rain and hail for the next few days.

The thunderstorms could only be the start of an uncomfortable month.

"May will fall into the water this year," predicts the meteorologist Dominik Jung from

wetter.net

.

"Definitely no stable spring high in sight until after mid-month."

Thunderstorm warning at the weekend: Many regions in Germany are affected by rain and hail

A low west of Ireland is responsible for the storms at the weekend, according to the DWD in a current forecast.

The low is expected to move from west to east over the course of Friday and can lead to the first brief thunderstorms as early as midday.

For the most part, however, the DWD expects rain showers.

In the west and south-west there will be increasing thunderstorms from noon.

Above all, places on the Lower Rhine / Emsland are affected, then south-eastern Lower Saxony, Hesse, Thuringia and Franconia up to Baden-Württemberg and the Alps.

"There can be direct regional flooding on small streams and rivers," warns weather expert Jung of the risks in many regions on Friday.

Residents near streams or rivers should be vigilant during violent thunderstorms or heavy rain.

"Streets can be flooded quickly and basements fill up." The DWD also specifically warns of heavy rain, hail with a diameter of up to two centimeters and gusts of wind up to around 80 km/h.

According to the DWD, there is a greater danger on Friday in the southwest, from the Black Forest to the edge of the Alps.

There could also be larger hail here, with a diameter of up to four centimeters, as well as heavy gusts of wind at around 100 kilometers per hour.

Especially in the south, the strong thunderstorms could last into the night, south of the Danube, for example, there is a risk of heavy rain.

Under certain circumstances, large amounts of rain could come together on Friday and threaten local flooding.

According to the two weather services, the storm situation will calm down on Saturday (May 6th).

But it's still cold and uncomfortable.

Rain showers from the west are expected to start again towards the afternoon on Sunday (7 May).

Heavy thunderstorms with rain and hail are expected again in the afternoon.

However, the DWD does not expect gusts of wind on Sunday.

  • Friday (May 5):

Thunderstorm with rain, hail and isolated squalls.

Temperatures of ten to 15 degrees in the northeast, in the rest of Germany sometimes 16 to 24 degrees.

  • Saturday (May 6):

    Cloudy weather, isolated rain possible.

"The first major storm situation of 2023 is imminent in parts of Germany," continues meteorologist Dominik Jung in his weather forecast.

Overall, according to Jung, it has been observed for years that the weather in Germany is becoming more and more extreme.

This also leads to heavier rainfall.

The meteorologist explains the increasingly extreme conditions as a consequence of climate change.
