“Secondarily, who operates the Walchensee power plant. What matters is how it's run."

The Walchensee power plant served as the venue for the 3rd summit meeting of the energy and climate protection advisory boards of the Oberland region. District climate protection manager Veronika Böhm reported briefly on this at the meeting of the district environmental committee. Among other things, joint actions in Bad Tölz-Wolfratshausen, Miesbach, Weilheim-Schongau and Garmisch-Partenkirchen were discussed at the meeting.

Bad Tölz-Wolfratshausen

- "All four districts take part in city cycling," said Böhm.

The campaign starts this Saturday (we reported).

The districts also work together at the climate spring events.

In addition, it was again about the difficult search for wind priority areas in the Oberland region (we reported).

And the participants were given a tour of the Walchensee power plant, which has been generating electricity from hydropower for almost 100 years.

District Administrator Josef Niedermaier (FW) took this as an opportunity to deliver “facts without emotions” on the “election campaign topic” of renationalization of the power plant.

In the approval process for the allocation of water rights, the district office examines the "interest in the decision on the matter".

Put simply, this means that the applicant must be able to exercise the water rights.

“But the Free State has no land, no power plant.

That's not how he gets it," said Niedermaier.

There is no reversion for the power plant that Uniper operates and the water rights that Uniper owns.

And just because the federal government has a 99 percent stake in Uniper AG, "you can of course discuss nationalizing the Walchensee power plant, but it's crazy," said Niedermaier.

"Just because you own telecom shares

"It is not economical to operate"

In addition, it is complex and difficult to detach a single power plant from the group.

Of course it's not impossible.

Niedermaier agrees with Jakob Koch (Greens).

"The Free State could buy back the power plant," said Koch.

"That would be expensive.

But such infrastructure belongs in the hands of the citizens.” Georg Riesch (FW) would sign the latter.

"It would have been nice if it had stayed with the state back then," he said.

However, it is not possible to separate a single power plant from the company.

"It's not economical to do that."

Of course, in the course of the reassignment of the water rights that expire in 2030, there are “understandable interests in the region” that have to be brought in, the district administrator added.

There is a desire to be more involved in value creation.

Water discharges for power generation or sensible amounts of residual water in the rivers would also have to be determined, said Franz Schöttl (CSU).

“Conservation concerns were simply not taken into account in the past.

The Isar valley suffered a lot from this.” These ecological concerns should definitely be reflected in the approval process.

Riesch also wants to know that the interests of the region are protected: “For us, who operates the power plant is actually of secondary importance.

What matters to us is how it is run.”
