Spain's Carlos Alcaraz, who retained his Masters 1000 Madrid title on Sunday, is just five points away from regaining the World No. 1, still held by Serbia's Novak Djokovic, in the ATP rankings released on Monday.

Hot on Djokovic's heels again, Alcaraz needs to play just one match at the Masters 1000 in Rome next week to secure world tennis leadership at the end of the tournament held at the traditional Foro Italico.

The Murcia, who was the youngest world No. 1 in history, had not played in Rome last year when Djokovic took the title. Everything to add up.

After losing six places, Germany's Alexander Zverev, 22nd, leaves the Top 20 for the first time since May 2017. His compatriot Jan-Lennard Struff, a finalist in Madrid after entering the main draw as a lucky loser, gained 37 places to place 28th, the best classification of his career that began far back in 2009.

Among the Argentine tennis players, Francisco Cerúndolo, who fell one step, remains the best ranked among his compatriots by ranking 31st. Sebastián Báez, who lost nine positions and now appears 40th, was delayed a little. They are followed by Tomás Martín Etcheverry (61°) and Pedro Cachín (68°).

Diego Schwartzman is finally still stuck in his negative spiral and is about to break out of the Top 100. El Peque, 30, lost 19th places and occupies 91st place in the ranking, one below Federico Coria, who is 90th after crumbling 12th places.
