Their name in the dictionary

More than 40 outstanding personalities are entering the Petit Larousse illustré 2024. Writers, philosophers, filmmakers, historians, sportsmen, scientists... How are they chosen? "The notoriety of the person and his work in France and in the French-speaking basin; the permanence of this notoriety; its legitimacy and recognition among the public, critics and peers; the universality of the work; the accessibility of the content of this work and its availability; and consistency with the values of the Petit Larousse, those of excellence, to the promotion of French culture", explains Carine Girac-Marinier, director of the dictionaries and encyclopedias department.

Haro on Anglicisms!

It must be recognized, each year, dictionaries are the receptacle of many English terms entered into use in France. The Petit Larousse is no exception to the rule. The "Franglais" dominates in spite of us. In the media, on the street or in the office, we hear these Anglicisms everywhere. Thus this 2024 edition welcomes new words from English or frankly English such as game space, home staging, flex office, webinar (or webinar), breaker-euse, youtubeur-euse, greenwashing, mixtape...

We came out here with the anglicisms of our objectivity. We have taken a stand

Bernard Cerquiglini, linguist

Under the leadership of Carine Girac-Marinier, director of the Dictionaries and Encyclopedias Department of Larousse, the team of the famous dictionary decided to take a stand. "We have integrated these English words. However, we have noticed a general reaction of weariness with regard to Anglicisms," says Bernard Cerquiglini, the scientific advisor of the Petit Larousse. And to explain: "This is why we chose to specify, when necessary, that these were anglicisms not recommended. We wrote "flex office" and next to it "anglicisme déconseillé", giving a French equivalent "bureau nomad". We came out here with the anglicisms of our objectivity. We have taken a stand."

The warning "anglicism not recommended" comes up repeatedly. But there is also an "official recommendation" with the equivalent in real French, hoping to see these alternatives come into use, you never know. Among the 150 new words, it is proposed escape game for escape game, nomadic office for flex office, conference or webinar webinar, greenwashing is not recommended, it is preferred greenwashing.

Better, the Petit Larousse created a new term for those writers who write for others - they were called "nègres" or "ghost writer": the pretty word "prête-plume" was born, with a hyphen and it is invariable.
