At least 21 people drowned yesterday (Sunday) and over ten were injured, after a boat they were on sank off the coastal town of Tanur in southern India, local media reported.
The boat, on which there were about 40 passengers, apparently capsized due to overcrowding.
The rescue team that arrived at the scene had difficulty pulling the boat out of the muddy water in which it sank and rescuing the trapped passengers.
At the end of the rescue efforts, 21 people were pronounced dead, and ten injured were sent for treatment at a local hospital.
The other passengers were released after receiving initial treatment.
"I am pained by the loss of life due to the capsizing of the boat," Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi wrote in a tweet he published on Twitter.

In October 2022, 76 people were killed when a vessel capsized in southern Nigeria, which occurred amid heavy flooding in the area.
A month earlier, five people died off the New Zealand coastal town of Kaikoura after a whale reportedly overturned the boat they were on.
