(ANSA) - PAVIA, 08 MAY - "We must reverse the approach of the Gentile reform, which at that time was very important and was also shared by Benedetto Croce. Today we must think about a reform that puts the talents of each boy at the center".
This was stated by Giuseppe Valditara, Minister of Education and Merit, speaking in Pavia at the inauguration of the new auditorium of the "Ugo Foscolo" classical high school.
"Contrary to what some think, without having listened adequately to my words - underlined Valditara -, merit is not an elitist challenge: it does not mean privileging a few to the detriment of many. Merit is a broadly democratic challenge, because it means enhancing everyone's talents and leaving no one behind. I am deeply convinced that in every boy there is a model of intelligence."
"Our Constitution - he added - reaffirms at every point the centrality of the human person, one of his most significant aspects of rupture with the past: every person is placed above the State, which becomes its servant. Our founding fathers, and I am thinking in particular of Giorgio LaPira, declared and put in writing that first comes the person and then the State, contrary to what happened in the fascist dictatorship and also in other dictatorships, such as the communist one. This 'reversal' can also affect the school by focusing on the talents of each child".
Valditara, accompanied by the head teacher Silvana Fossati, answered the questions posed by the students of the Taramelli-Foscolo institute and then visited both schools, focusing mainly on the internal museums.
Outside the high school, some students protested against the minister, displaying a banner that read "Against the school of merit, humiliation and hypocrisy". (ANSA).
