Highlights: "Bares für Rares" is a popular antiques show on ZDF in Germany. Customers come to the sales halls of the show to get rid of unwanted gifts. Since the show's debut in 2013, the dealers have bought a few real treasures – at breathtaking prices. In 2019, Cosima Birk and her daughter Stephanie Huber received 42,000 euros for a piece of jewelry that contained splinters of wood from the cross of Jesus Christ. In 2021, Marlies Fischer was awarded 20,30 euro for a lithograph by the expressionist painter Otto Mueller.

A "Cash for Rares" saleswoman wants to turn an old music box into money. This was once given to her by her husband – much to her chagrin.

Pulheim – The motivations that lead customers to the sales halls of "Bares für Rares" are as varied as the junk they present to the antiques experts. Some want to turn a beloved family heirloom into money, others hope that a flea market find will turn out to be a great treasure. For Gisela Stock, however, her detour into the popular ZDF format is more about getting rid of an unwanted gift.

"The worst gift": "Cash for Rares" customer wants to get rid of old music box at all costs

Accompanied by her daughter Corinna Schmidt, Gisela Stock presents an old music box in an artistically crafted wooden container to the antique dealer Sven Deutschmanek (46) and presenter Horst Lichter (61) at "Bares für Rares". While the two marvel at the object, Gisela explains that she got the instrument from her husband for Christmas 28 years ago – but it was definitely not on her wish list.

"That was actually the worst gift in my life," she recalls, "I had wished for a small music box with a doll and get this box." For Horst Lichter and Sven Deutschmanek, it causes laughter, but the junk professional emphasizes: "I don't think it was such a bad gift at all."

Because the unwanted gift is a Swiss roller music box from the 19th century – which, according to his estimates, could be worth 450 to 550 euros. "I don't want to take them back with me," Gisela explains and gratefully accepts the dealer card.

The Greatest "Cash for Rares" Treasures

Since the very first episode of "Bares für Rares" premiered on ZDF on August 3, 2013, the negotiating dealers have bought a few real treasures – at breathtaking prices. In 2019, Cosima Birk and her daughter Stephanie Huber received 42,000 euros for a piece of jewelry that contained splinters of wood from the cross of Jesus Christ. In 2021, Marlies Fischer was awarded 20,30 euros for a lithograph by the expressionist painter Otto Mueller, of which there are only 500 pieces worldwide. In the same year, Sabine Riemer was delighted to receive 29,000 euros for a gold-plated drinking vessel from the court of the Russian Empress Catherine the Great. So you can tell that visiting flea markets and rummaging around in the attic pay off.

Because of sound problems: Old music box finds no buyer at "Bares für Rares"

As Corinna reveals, the music box originally cost 1800 Deutschmarks – so the "Bares für Rares" dealers would have to trump Sven's estimate many times over. Unfortunately, this does not happen and it ends at just 250 euros, mainly because the dealers do not want to take any risks because of the sound problems of the old instrument. Even though she wanted to get rid of her unloved gift so badly – in the end, Gisela still takes it home with her.

"We learned a lot of interesting things about the music box," Corinna sums up after the unsuccessful sales attempt and explains with a view to her mother: "Maybe you'll take her into your heart a little bit now."
