Groundbreaking ceremony for the new multi-storey car park in Weilheim - it's not just about cars

Highlights: Two weeks after the start of construction, the official groundbreaking ceremony for the multi-storey car park on Krumpperstraße took place. 14 garages for the fire brigade and the Red Cross are being built there, as well as two parking levels with a good 100 parking spaces. The energy centre for the future Weilheim-Mitte local heating network is to go into provisional operation as early as next autumn. It is the first building block of a district heating supply that is to be expanded nationwide over the next few years – with four additional combined heat and power plants.

There will be 14 garages for the fire brigade and the Red Cross - as well as 100 parking spaces for cars. But in the foreground of the multi-storey car park project on Krumpperstraße is something else, it was now said at the official groundbreaking ceremony.

Weilheim – Two weeks after the start of construction, the official groundbreaking ceremony for the multi-storey car park on the former municipal utility headquarters on Krumpperstraße took place. 14 tall garages for the fire brigade and the Red Cross are being built there, as well as two parking levels with a good 100 parking spaces (see box below) and the energy centre for the future Weilheim-Mitte local heating network. Unlike at the beginning of the planning five years ago, the latter is now in the foreground, explained Stadtwerke boss Peter Müller. He also referred to "a seemingly endless series of changes and delays" in the development plan process.

Combined heat and power plant in the multi-storey car park to supply heat as early as autumn

According to Müller, the combined heat and power plant is to go into provisional operation as early as next autumn: "A sporty period, but feasible." The energy center will supply customers in the center with heat and generate electricity. It is the first building block of a district heating supply that is to be expanded nationwide in Weilheim over the next few years – with four additional combined heat and power plants. The multi-storey car park is expected to be ready by mid-2024. As the landowner and builder, the municipal utilities will rent out the garages for the rescue organizations and operate the multi-storey car park itself.

Prior to the construction of the multi-storey car park, extensive remediation of contaminated sites was necessary

At the groundbreaking ceremony with Mayor Markus Loth, members of the board of directors of the municipal utilities as well as employees of the planning offices and construction companies, Müller explained the long history of this project. Initial considerations for the new use of the property – the former municipal utility headquarters – had already been made in 2013. In 2015, the company moved to Deutenhausener Feld, and in 2017 the remediation of the former gasworks on Krumpperstraße was completed. In the gasworks, which was founded in 1864 and bought by the city in 1899, gas was produced from pitch coal, especially from the Peißenberg mine, Mayor Loth looked back at the history. In 1954, gas production there was discontinued and Weilheim was connected to the long-distance gas network. But the decommissioned plants were only "nicely covered" at the time. When in 2003 a major tar oil damage was found, which threatened to spread to the groundwater, the district office ordered a large-scale remediation of contaminated sites – for which buildings had to be demolished. After the renovation, the area on Krumpperstraße was last used as a parking lot.

All participants in the groundbreaking ceremony wished the construction work a good progress. "Let's hope that all the work will be accident-free and that the entire property can actually go into operation in mid-2024," says Loth.

Parking spaces in the multi-storey car park are almost exclusively for employees from the surrounding area

Around 100 parking spaces for cars will be created in the multi-storey car park on Krumpperstraße. These are mainly rented out to authorities and companies in the vicinity. As it was said on Monday in the transport committee of the city council, the district office wants to rent about 50 parking spaces ("gladly more") for employees, the rescue coordination center, the agricultural office and the community center each about ten – and several companies and offices from the city center a total of about 15. This leaves around five parking spaces for the "public" – intended exclusively for all-day parkers.
