On Tuesday 9 May, Olaf Scholz delivered his first speech to the European Parliament since his arrival at the Chancellery in December 2021. His statements were eagerly awaited, while Germany has caused much annoyance in recent months within the EU on such hot topics as military support for Ukraine or the end of the combustion engine.

On this Europe Day, the Chancellor did not fail to recall the fundamentals of the EU. "The war between our peoples has become unimaginable - thanks to the European Union," he stressed. As soldiers marched through Red Square to celebrate the Nazi defeat, Scholz called on Europeans not to let go of Russian power.
