Andrew Garfield and Daisy Edgar-Jones will star in Voyagers, the new film by Oscar-winningChilean director Sebastián Lelio, according to US media. The film, Variety reported, will be about the story of the romantic relationship between astronomer and Contact author Carl Sagan and documentary producer and director Ann Druyan.

Voyagers is set in 1977 when NASA was preparing to launch humanity's first interstellar probes and a team led by Carl Sagan sets out to create a message to accompany them, known as the Golden Record, which includes music and images, for possible alien civilizations.

From there, the plot drifts into the love story between Druyan and Sagan (died 1996), who worked together on Cosmos, an influential series covering a wide range of scientific topics.

Carl Sagan was an icon of astronomy and popular science.

The Director's Word

"As a nine-year-old boy growing up during Chile's dictatorship, Carl Sagan and Ann Druyan's television series Cosmos had a profound impact on me, igniting my fascination with life's biggest questions and mysteries," Lelio said.

The film by Lelio – the son of an Argentine father and Chilean mother, who moved to Chile at the age of two, and won an Oscar with A Fantastic Woman – will be produced by Ben Browning for FilmNation Entertainment, which will be released for sale at the upcoming Cannes Market.

A fantastic woman revolves around a transsexual woman and won the award for best screenplay in Berlin and made history by being the first Chilean film to win the Oscar for best foreign language film.

A cosmic love story

Through a statement, Lelio expressed his excitement for the challenge: "It is a dream to make a film about the Gold Record and, within it, the inspiring love story between Carl and Ann. I am thrilled that Andrew Garfield and Daisy Edgar-Jones are at the center of this epic romance that unfolds in the infinite context of space and time."

In turn, the filmmaker and protagonist of the story, Ann Druyan, said: "Imagine falling madly and truly in love with one of the greatest human beings who ever lived, while creating a complex message about what it is to be alive."

He continued: "A golden disc placed on the first interstellar spacecraft launched by our species, destined to navigate the Milky Way galaxy long after Earth ceases to exist. It takes a movie to bring that mythical experience, this cosmic love story, to life. After years of searching, I feel like we've found exactly the right colleagues and artists to capture all their magic," he said of actors Garfield and Edgar Jones.

Carl Sagan awakened and sustained in many people an interest in science, from beginning scientists to popular public figures and millions of dreamy children to idealistic adults. His contributions to society were applauded around the world, so much so that he won the Pulitze Prizefor his wonderful outreach work in 1978.
