How much do you tip in the US? With a video, an American waitress shows on TikTok how little she earns in Texas for her work.

Munich/Texas – How much tip is appropriate in the United States? What is too little? What, perhaps, even a tad too much? Between the West and East Coasts, between Los Angeles and San Francisco on the one hand and New York and Miami on the other, there is an unwritten law regarding the "tip" for waitresses and waiters.

Tipping in the USA: Waitress posts mini-wage on payslip

It is important to know that the legally binding minimum wage in the USA has been just 7.25 US dollars for years – the equivalent of about 6.61 euros. The conditions have not changed since then (as of May 2, 2023).

If you want to know how important tipping is for employees in the catering industry, you can use a TikTok video from early 2020 as a comparison. A waitress presented her measly hourly wage in this video.

Tipping in the USA: Waitresses and waiters get little pay

At the time, the waitress in question at least felt compelled to make a fundamental criticism on social media. "That's why you should always tip your bartender service," she says in the video sequence, explaining, "These are my hours for two weeks. I worked 71 hours. I was paid $2.13 per hour." She continues, "I should have made $150.81."

However, the lady points out that social security contributions, contributions for health insurance and part for income tax were deducted. "I was paid $9.28 for 70 hours of work," she calculates, pointing to the equivalent amount on her pay slip/paycheck. Once again, the waitress affirms, "That's why you're tipping."

Tipping in the U.S.

The rule of thumb is that in the U.S., you tip 15 to 20 percent, called a "tip." Ten percent, which may have a lot of effect in Germany, is hardly enough in the United States.

Did she get the wrong employer? According to the New York Times, the average hourly wage in the U.S. food service industry was $2016.9 in 61 because companies always have the option of raising the minimum wage. The approximately 3.2 million Americans who served in bars and restaurants at the time were (and probably are) among the lowest paid workers in the United States. By way of comparison, the German minimum wage is currently twelve euros per hour.

Recently, a waitress from New York caused a stir when she complained on Twitter about $70 in tips from Spaniards. Accordingly, these had only added ten percent "Tip" to the bill. But: According to the Süddeutsche Zeitung (SZ), one of the unwritten rules is that you give a "tip" of at least 15 percent of the bill in addition.

Tipping in the USA: At least 15 percent "tip" for waitresses and waiters

A simple example calculation: If you have an amount of 100 dollars, you give a tip of 15 dollars on top. As the SZ further writes, even 20 percent is appropriate (and desirable) for a very good service. Some restaurants in the U.S. already automatically add the tip to the invoice amount, and customers then pay the total amount directly.

The SZ also reported that some innkeepers now automatically write 18 percent "gratuity" on the bill for foreign guests and tourists. Tipping is a significant part of the income of most waitresses and waiters in the USA, as the case from Texas proves. (pm)
