"Industrial accident": Regensburg coalition does not elect its own candidate

Highlights: Regensburg city council is always good for surprises. In the election for the aldermen's selection committee, the candidate of the co-governing CSU failed. The fact that this coalition has once again failed to come to an agreement is still causing internal question marks and annoyance. The CSU man Troidl was thrown out in the first round of voting with only 22 votes – not even all members of the coalition voted for him. The opposition candidates Simon (28 votes) and Mayr (29) do much better.

No peace in Regensburg's town hall. In the election for the aldermen's selection committee, the candidate of the co-governing CSU failed. In the absence of agreement?

Regensburg - "Actually, this election was about nothing," says a member of the governing coalition in Regensburg City Hall, who does not want to be named. But the fact that this coalition has once again failed to come to an agreement and that a candidate of the co-governing CSU has therefore failed in the said election is still causing internal question marks and annoyance.

"Industrial accident" in the Regensburg coalition: Peace summit was not until the end of March

It was only at the end of March that they met for the peace summit in view of various differences of opinion, especially between the CSU, the largest faction in the city council, and the rest of the coalition – SPD, Free Voters, FDP, CSB. And in the aftermath, a new harmony was announced.

But since this supposedly meaningless election, it has already suffered significant scratches.

Election to the committee of aldermen: Actually only a formality

That's what it's all about. Every five years, an election committee meets at the Regensburg District Court to elect the lay judges for the criminal chambers and juvenile chambers of the district and regional courts. This committee consists of a judge at the district court as chairperson, the district administrator and seven confidants as assessors.

The city of Regensburg sends three confidants to this committee. And these, in turn, are elected by the city council – at the suggestion of the parliamentary groups, in a secret ballot. Whoever receives two-thirds of the votes of the members present is elected. And because each candidate is allowed to give up to three candidates one vote, this is basically a rather unspectacular affair. Pure formality.

Election to the aldermen's committee: Coalition had the majority of votes

This year there were four proposals – Marcus Troidl (CSU), Evelyn Kolbe-Stockert (SPD), Tom Mayr (Brücke) and Maria Simon (Greens). But because the coalition has 44 votes at the meeting in question with 24 councillors present, including the mayor, and the rest of the city council only has 20, the whole thing actually looked like a clear thing.

If there is a little agreement, the two coalition candidates Troidl and Kolbe-Stockert should get the necessary 30 votes.

Election to the aldermen's committee: CSU candidate fails in the first round of voting

But if you don't coordinate with each other, it can go wrong. And so CSU man Troidl was thrown out in the first round of voting with only 22 votes – not even all members of the coalition voted for him. Kolbe-Stockert gets just 24 votes.

The opposition candidates Simon (28 votes) and Mayr (29) do much better. The Brücke candidate even misses the necessary 30 by just one vote. However, no one gets this in the first round of voting.

Coalition fails its own candidate: "Just a minor industrial accident"

In the second round of voting, Simon, Mayr and Kolbe-Stockert did so without any problems, with the SPD candidate coming out on top with 33 votes.

In the aftermath of the embarrassing election, tempers have calmed down a bit in the meantime. A member of the CSU parliamentary group speaks of a "small industrial accident" that happened due to a lack of agreement. The fact that someone deliberately wanted to give it to the CSU, because it repeatedly crosses the line within the coalition, is ruled out. What else can you do.
