Competition of young programmers: 65 participants competed in the robotics competition "World Robot Olympiad" at the Welfen-Gymnasium in Schongau.

Schongau – Headmaster Bernhard O'Connor was "very proud" that the regional competition of the "World Robot Olympiad" took place for the first time at the Welfen-Gymnasium in Schongau. The fact that the participants ventured into school on a sunny Saturday shows how much interest and passion they have in the topic of robotics. Eleven of the 22 teams came from the high school's robotics courses. On the other hand, a team from Ingolstadt had the longest journey.

In his welcoming remarks, Bernhard O'Connor expressed his gratitude to the Frank Hirschvogel Foundation for providing financial support for the competition. When the concept was heard, "we didn't have to think long to make a commitment for financial support," said Walter Pischel as a representative of the foundation. The students of the project seminar "Robotics Competition" under the direction of the STEM representative and physics student council leader Simon Batzer were responsible for the planning and organization of the event.

Evaluation rounds according to construction and programming phase

After the welcoming words, the surprise tasks were presented to the participants. The young programmers had to incorporate them spontaneously. Depending on the age group, the participants then had a maximum of two hours to build and program the robot from Lego bricks. At the end of the construction and programming phase, the four rounds of scoring began. The self-built robots had to prove that they were programmed correctly and could handle various tasks on a playing field. This included, for example, the collection of containers or the recognition of colors.

Each passed task earned the participants a certain number of points, and two students from a P-seminar acted as referees. In the scoring rounds, joy and horror were sometimes close together: For example, the CUP team from Freising had to digest the shock of zero points due to a loosened Lego part in one round, but in the next round the three boys achieved the maximum number of points and the joy was correspondingly great.

These places reached the teams

This success finally ensured that Leonhard Buchner, David Blank and Maximilian Schweiger from Freising won the competition in the "Senior" age group. In the "Junior" age group, Elena Specht, David Stehno and Leon Martin from Team RGU2 took first place. And in the "Starter" category, the Türkheim third-graders Valentin Schulze, Noah Mersberger and Jonas Thalmann were victorious. At nine and ten years old respectively, the three boys were by far the youngest team in the competition. All winners of the regional competition will be able to demonstrate their skills once again at the German final in autumn.

Although the teams from the courses in Schongau did not achieve first place, they can look forward to third place in the "Junior" age group, second place in "Senior" and second and third place in "Starter".

"These are great results for the first start in this competition format," summed up teacher Simon Batzer in an interview with the Heimatzeitung. "In the long term, I would like to establish the competition in Schongau and hope that the enthusiasm generated by the competition at the grammar school will be transferred to the next few years," says Batzer, because: "Robotics is one of the key technologies of the future."
