For schoolchildren, recipients of citizen's allowance receive additional financial support. This has increased with the start of the new basic security.
Berlin – The standard citizen's allowance rate is 502 euros per month. This is intended to secure the existential basis, which covers, among other things, costs for food, clothing and transport. In some cases, however, recipients can also apply for additional requirements. This also applies to parents who receive citizen's allowance and whose children are still at school. Here, funds from the education and participation package can be applied for.
Citizen's allowance: Personal school supplies have risen
The funds are to be used to cover the costs of school trips, school supplies or communal lunches. With the start of the citizen's allowance in 2023, the entitlement to money for school materials has now also increased. The lump sum for this is paid out in February and August.
According to the report, recipients of citizen's allowance already received 2023 euros for their children's school materials in February 58. In August, another 116 euros in subsidies are to follow, as the Federal Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs (BMAS) explains on its website. The personal school requirement is increased annually by the same percentage as the citizen's allowance standard requirement.

Education and participation package: Recipients of citizen's allowance can get help here
But not only materials such as books or workbooks are paid additionally. The following benefits are also included in the education and participation package:
- Excursions: The costs for one-day or multi-day school trips or excursions from daycare centers are covered
- Pupil transport: The journeys to school by bus and train are covered by the additional citizen's allowance. Even if the student ticket also entitles the holder to travel outside of school traffic.
- Learning support: Under certain conditions, learning support – i.e. tutoring – can be used. This applies regardless of whether the child's transfer is at risk or not. An important prerequisite, however, is that there is no comparable school offer.
- Expenses for lunches in daycare centers and schools: The communal lunch in schools, daycare centers and day care centers is paid. And all this at no additional cost to parents.
- Social participation (sport, culture, etc.): Children of recipients of citizen's allowance can receive 15 euros per month for participation in social and cultural life. However, proof of participation in the activity, such as membership in a sports club, is required.
