Man's best friend in action: A dog in Japan has earned the title of "heroine" and received a special police certificate of appreciation after saving the life of a man who suffered a heart attack when she barked loudly and brought help.
Kauma, a five-year-old mixed-breed dog, received the special letter of appreciation from the local police and fire department unit at a special ceremony in the city of Chiba, about 40 kilometers south of the capital Tokyo on the island of Honshu.
Koma lives on a horseback riding farm outside the city, which is also frequented by many elderly citizens. In December, a 50-year-old man suffered a heart attack and fainted. Cauma noticed the faint man and began barking like a frenzy. Not content with just embarrassment, the dog wandered around the farm looking for help.
Kauma found one of the riding instructors and, with loud embarrassment, led him to the man who needed help. The guide called an ambulance to the scene and the man's life was saved. The man returned to good health and even returned to riding on the farm.
"A kauma is usually a dog that is very small and barks only when something very serious happens," says Yauna Marao, the riding instructor who called the dog to the aid of the man who suffered a heart condition. The guide says that the farm has kept the dogs for generations and their job is to welcome guests and look after the horses. "This is not the first time Kauma has helped us. In the past, she referred us when horses were escaping from the stables and once she alerted us about an injured foal," says the riding instructor.
