It doesn't come as a surprise to many: Lukas and Sophia end up in 2022st place among the most popular first names in Bavaria 1. However, places 2 and 3 are likely to surprise.
Munich – The name Lukas has been in vogue with new parents in Bavaria for years. It doesn't matter if it's written with "c" or with "k". In an evaluation by the Society for the German Language (GfdS) for 2022, it once again took first place in Bavaria. Sophia is still popular with girls, as she was last year (2021).
Most popular first names 2022 in Bavaria: Leon and Emilia land in 2nd place
It was only at the beginning of the year that first name expert Knud Bielefeld also determined the most popular baby names for 2022. Its results and those of the GfdS differ somewhat. At Bielefeld, Elias took first place in the boys' names. Sophia was also at the top of the girls' list. The evaluations for 2022 in comparison:
Most popular first names 2022 in Bavaria (GfdS) | Most popular names 2022 in Bavaria (Knud Bielefeld) |
---|---|
1st place: Sophia and Lukas | 1st place: Sophia and Elisa |
2nd place: Emilia and Leon | 2nd place: Emilia and Lukas |
3rd place: Emma and Maximilian | 3rd place: Hannah and Jonas |
At Bielefeld, Emma took 4th place, Leon 5th place and Maximilian 7th place. So the differences are not radical. In Bielefeld's evaluation, according to the information, with 250,000 birth reports, around 34 percent of all newborns nationwide were included in the evaluation. The GfdS recorded 333,983 (48.7%) first names among girls and 352,122 (51.3%) among boys, i.e. slightly more. Nationwide, Bielefeld and the GfdS came to the same conclusion.

Bavaria despite nationwide trend: Noah in 1st place in many federal states
One thing is clear from the statistics: Bavaria is defying the nationwide trend in boys' first names. In numerous federal states, Noah took 1st place among boys' names and thus climbs to the top of the most popular first names in Germany. Emilia wins in the girls' category. Both names were already the most popular baby names in 2020.
