Ambulance hindered: Man dies during climate strike – "Last generation" admits mistakes

The "Last Generation" is demonstrating in Germany and Austria for compliance with the climate targets. In Vienna, the climate stickers were pulled off the street.

Vienna/Munich – Recently, the climate adhesives of the "last generation" paralyzed Berlin, at least partially. On May 10, the group demonstrated in Austria's capital, Vienna. The demonstrators blocked an ambulance.

Air conditioning stickers pulled off the road by motorists

In the Viennese district of Favoriten, there was an escalation during a demonstration of climate glue. Two roundabouts were blocked: at Praterstern and at the distribution circle. "Get out of the roundabout" posted the "Last Generation Austria" on its Twitter account. "There is a standstill at Praterstern and at the distribution circle because our government is going round in circles. We are the last generation that can still take countermeasures."

Vehicles were prevented from continuing by the blockade. This did not please every motorist, who escalated the ensuing conflict. The climate stickers were dragged off the road by angry motorists and passers-by shortly after the start of the demonstration. Under a video of the incident published by the "Last Generation", they wrote: "When will the government finally protect our survival?" By 8:30 a.m., the blockades had already been dispersed by the police.

Ambulance stuck in the traffic jam of the protest – patient dies

Another incident occurred during the protest of the "Last Generation", which is mainly financed by donations. As it became known, the group blocked the passage of an emergency vehicle – according to their own statements, unintentionally. As reported, the ambulance was on its way to resuscitation. Only after the dispersal of the strike by the police was the ambulance able to pass. "There has been an operation in Lower Austria in which an elderly gentleman had to be resuscitated," rescue spokeswoman Corina Had was quoted as saying.

Instead of the ambulance, the patient was finally given medical care by emergency helicopter personnel. Despite the operation, the man died at the scene. On the part of the "Last Generation", a spokesman announced that "a mistake has happened". According to this, "we would not have called the rescue control center today in the hustle and bustle before the action and informed them about our action".

According to spokesman David Sonnenbaum, there was "no rescue vehicle in sight" at the demonstration. The activists have nevertheless been reported, they are accused of "endangering physical safety". They face a prison sentence of up to three months. The investigation is ongoing. Most recently, a climate glue woman was sentenced to several months in prison.
