Jisr al-Zarqa, a member of the local council, was shot Thursday during a television interview he conducted with the Public Broadcasting Corporation in front of his workhouse. This is the second time an assassination attempt has been made on the victim, 53-year-old Mohammed "Abu Lutfi" Jurban, after he was shot by a masked man on the village's main street in 2020.

A preliminary investigation of the case revealed that in the afternoon, Jorban was interviewed by the corporation and spoke about Smotrich, who is pressing to cancel the planning director's decision to divert Highway 2, as reported earlier today. Then, two masked men who carried out the shooting arrived and left. Jurban was seriously injured and rushed for medical treatment.

"Crossing all boundaries, an elected official being shot while being interviewed by the Public Broadcasting Corporation," LaValle said. Sheikh Murad Amash, head of the council. "It is known that we are a battered community that suffers severely from all these incidents, and we constantly pleaded with the Israel Police to raise its head and start dealing with criminals who have no God. But unfortunately, things are going in bad directions," he added.

Abu Lutfi is the father of 11 children, one of whom was murdered and one who was imprisoned.

In 2020, Jurban was shot by a masked man in the evening, while walking on the village's main street, a few dozen meters from the Grand Mosque. "There were many other people on the street, I was walking home and suddenly from the direction of the center of the village a man ran towards me and shot in my direction and fled," a council member and education portfolio holder who was wounded in the leg described at the time. "I felt ill, I don't remember much of what happened next."

The unknown assailant continued toward Jarban's family home, shot his 33-year-old nephew in the face, lightly wounded another 20-year-old, and left. Lutfi complained to the police that he was being threatened months before the incident, and wrote verbally to the village police station commander and senior commanders. "I and some new councillors came to make a change. Maybe it's related. Unfortunately, the police didn't do much, and to this day the suspects roamed free. When I call to ask what happens every time, they tell me 'in treatment.' Yesterday it could have ended in murder," he added.

"I told the police, if they murder me, you're guilty." Lutfi (Photo: Reuven Castro)

The police are not really interested in dealing with the problem of violence in Arab society, Lutfi explained after the incident two years ago. "They need to wake up, I don't think they can say they don't know," he said. "A masked man doesn't leave the house masked, the village has cameras everywhere. If an Arab murders a Jew and the Arab escapes, then within a few hours he is found. I've been seeing my murder close on the wall for some time now. I have told police commanders more than once that if something happens to me, if they murder me, you are guilty."
