While the outdoor swimming pools in Taufkirchen and Dorfen are already open, the water rats in Erding still have to be patient. These are the backgrounds.

Erding - The pools of the municipal utilities will not open until Saturday, May 20, at 8 a.m., just under a month after the closure of the neighboring indoor pool. The reason lies in the Ukraine war and the resulting energy crisis. However, the municipal company does not just let time pass.

In the past few days, the team led by Robert Maier, head of the leisure facilities of the municipal utilities, has bagged many letters, 15,000 to be precise, as he reveals in an interview with the local newspaper. Because so many electricity and gas customers will receive a voucher for an outdoor pool season ticket in the next few days. 90 percent of gas and 70 percent of electricity customers have saved.

At the beginning of the energy crisis, the municipal utilities had announced that those who consume less energy than they needed in the previous year would be allowed to use the outdoor pool free of charge for one summer. "The tickets can then be redeemed at the swimming pool ticket office from the opening," promises Maier.

He can already take stock of the winter half-year. "We had about 100,000 visitors, a figure that we are satisfied with." The years before, at least before Corona, there were always around 110,000. Maier can explain the discrepancy. Because when, after the Russian invasion of their neighboring country, no one knew how much gas Putin would still let through the pipeline and at what (lunar) prices, everyone turned their thermostats – also in fear of a forced closure by the federal government. Stadtwerke Erding also lowered the temperatures.

And the customers immediately give them the thumbs-up. It was too cold for so many that Erding was one of the first baths in the republic to collect the reduction and returned to temperatures between 28 and 30 degrees and 32 to 33 degrees on warm bathing days.

Municipal utility boss Christopher Ruthner said at the time that the customer losses were disproportionate to the savings. But he didn't want to give up the savings pen. As early as October 2022, he announced: "To do this, we are extending the closing time between the indoor and outdoor pool seasons somewhat, so we also save energy."

Nevertheless, there is plenty to do in the municipal facility. Maier explains that they now have time to renew the (gas-powered) heating system, which supplies both outdoor and indoor pools. "On the one hand, we are replacing the peak-load boiler, which is over 30 years old, which will save a lot of energy," says Maier. In the case of a combined heat and power plant, the engine and the generator are replaced after damage at the end of the indoor pool season. The latter will receive a revision. "Removal and reinstallation is very time-consuming," says Maier.

And the municipal utility is considering becoming more energy-independent. "We are looking into installing a solar thermal system on the roof of the indoor swimming pool." But nothing has been decided yet.

The outdoor pool has 70,000 to 90,000 visitors per season, depending on the weather. You will find the usual water temperature: "It stays at 24 degrees," promises Maier.

The municipal utilities also want to use the summer to find a new tenant for the indoor pool kiosk. The contract with the previous tenant Alexander Beil was not renewed.
