Highlights: The series "Tribal Campfires," broadcast by the Public Broadcasting Corporation, shows the mental makeup of the left. "The disintegration of the people of Israel into tribes" is not a fact, but a theory of a camp disappointed that the steering wheel was taken from its hands • The solution to the invented problem is also, of course, only in the spirit of that camp

If you want to know the mental makeup of the left, perhaps the series "Tribal Campfires," broadcast by the Public Broadcasting Corporation, will present a neat picture. True, in order to decipher the soul of the left, there is no need for a special series. It is enough to read most newspapers and listen to most radio stations. But "Bonfires of the Tribes" concentrates the material neatly, and there is no need to watch it all - the first quarter of an hour clearly describes the framework within which the creators of the series live, the corporate executives who approved this manifesto for broadcast, and also those who can endure five hours of this distress.

The tribal theory gained notoriety when it was voiced by former Israeli President Reuven Rivlin, who presented it in 2015. According to Rivlin, four tribes that are equal in size but fundamentally different make up Israeli society: secular, national-religious, ultra-Orthodox, and Arab. Everyone feels a minority, and everyone feels persecuted. And the rift between ultra-Orthodox and secular Jews is like the rift between national-religious and Arabs.

But this distinction is an opinion. It is possible, for example, to present a different distinction: Israel is a Jewish state with an Arab national minority. There are various disagreements on various issues, as is customary in a democracy. But on the basis of the rift-based opinion, Rivlin went on to omit the common denominator Jewish and Zionist. Instead, he proposed a vision of "shared Israeliness" in order to solve the imaginary problem he presented. After all, it is possible that Zionism, which is based on the Jewish identity of the state, is no longer doing the job, so why not abandon it, in fact.

The philosophy of "we were conquered by the barbarians and therefore we are falling apart" is also at the base of the series "Tribal Campfires" by Doki Dror and Naftali Glicksberg. This time, however, the tribes were reduced to two: right and left. Date of split: November 1995. The reason: Rabin's assassination.

One can agree that Rabin's assassination was a weighty event in the history of the state. Not only because of the national trauma of the political assassination of a prime minister. It's bad enough, but on the trauma grew a tower of accusing an entire camp of murder, which is also perhaps natural, and with it a solid fantasy of "what would have happened." And as is the way of solid fantasies, this can interfere with the perception of reality.

According to the corporation's publications, the series deals with "the disintegration of Israel into tribes, which is reaching its peak these very days... And how the company got to where it is today – divided, suspicious and divided." In short: from the moment the left lost power – through no fault of its own, of course – it went for the State of Israel. It fell apart. All is lost, friends. And now please give me music of darkness.

The atmosphere of Kaddish accompanies the aforementioned pseudo-doku with Venus narration and background music reserved for memorial days. The left is not the left, but the "peace camp." Opposite him is the right-wing camp, which suffers when all of it is blamed for Rabin's assassination, but we know that the entire right is to blame. And who is most to blame? Voila, I wonder who.

Chants of "Rabin is a traitor" could be heard from the crowd, but in order to emphasize the message, Netanyahu's response is not broadcast

According to "Tribal Bonfires," the Oslo process progressed really well until Baruch Goldstein spoiled everything, and the Palestinians started blowing up buses. Forgotten Arafat's deception and the mobilization of the entire media to hide his true intentions. The concerns of opponents of the agreement were portrayed as paranoia of peaceful refuseniks. Ending the conflict was within reach.

Then the announcer says in a somber voice: "A new leader to the right, who is leading aggressive and virulent propaganda against the peace process, and personally against Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin." To illustrate his remarks, Netanyahu is seen on the balcony in Zion Square, modeling venomousness: "We are here because we have no other country. It is not an Arab state alongside Israel, but an Arab state instead of Israel. And only this government refuses to see and show what everyone understands. Anyone who doesn't bury his head in the sand."

As is customary in manifestos such as "We almost had peace, but Bibi...", chants of "Rabin is a traitor" were heard, but in order to emphasize the message, Netanyahu's response, which is: "Not with these calls, calm down." He may have said more, but Guy Zohar, also from the corporation, who tried to find out on his program "From the Other Side" what Netanyahu said from the balcony in Zion Square in response to chants of "Rabin is a traitor," left only "not with these chants." "Relax" could only be seen in the subtitles on the small screen behind it.

For "Tribal Campfires" this does not spoil the thesis, and the narrator continues. "About a month after the right-wing demonstration in which the prime minister was branded a traitor, the peace camp convened for a mass event in support of Yitzhak Rabin and the Oslo process, an event that will lead to the beginning of separation from the common story of the tribes in Israel."

Again, according to all the clichés of the genre: "The right is bad and wants wars, the left is good and wants peace," Rabin said at the rally: "I believe that there is a chance for peace, a great chance and we must take advantage of it. I have always believed that the majority of the people want peace." It is clear that the peace that Rabin sought was that rosy and childish fantasy that never had a chance to come true, but for its loss the leftist camp mourns to this day, and digs into the illusion that without Rabin's assassination – which is Netanyahu's responsibility – everything would have been simply wonderful.

Who does the theory of conflicting tribes serve? Not Israel, of course, but those who find it difficult to come to terms with what municipal parlance calls "changing the character of the neighborhood." The very change is an existential threat, especially to those who have become accustomed to being the sole arbiter of the House Committee. The "peace camp" was about to bring us real peace as in fairy tales, the right wing and its leader incited and poisoned - and hope! Israeli society has broken down into components that will never be able to live together in peace.

But the experience of disintegration is not shared by Klal Yisrael, who knows that the main threat to Israeli society is not the "internal rift" but armed enemies from without, with a common vision based on the destruction of the Jewish state, no matter which tribe. The internal rift is merely an emotional experience of the former chairman of the house committee, who looks with disgust at the residents of the condominium building and quips, "The neighbors are not nice to me." As far as he is concerned, as in terms of the "bonfires of the tribes," the people of Israel are invading tribes that step on their garden and spoil their NOP.
