Resignation of the mayor of Saint-Brévin after a fire: Macron condemns "unworthy attacks"

2023-05-11T09:58:07.199Z

Highlights: Prime Minister of France, Nicolas Sarkozy, has called for a halt to a plan to build a new school in the south of France. Sarkozy said the plan was not a solution to the crisis in the eurozone, but a way to help the people of the region. He also called for an end to the "lack of support" for those who want to leave the country and return to their home countries. The plan was to build the new school on the site of the old one, which was destroyed by a fire in the 1970s.

Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne also gave "all her support" to Yannick Morez, elected for Loire-Atlantique who decided to resign after his home was set on fire.

«

Unworthy attacks". Emmanuel Macron reacted this Thursday morning after the resignation of the mayor (DVD) of Saint-Brévin whose home was targeted by arson. "The attacks against Yannick Morez, mayor of Saint-Brevin-les-Pins, and his family, are unworthy. To this elected representative of the Republic, his wife and children, I reiterate my solidarity and that of the Nation, "wrote the head of state on Twitter.

Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne, meanwhile, considered "very shocking" the fire in connection with the relocation of a reception center for asylum seekers, which caused her resignation, promising to "better protect" elected officials.

«

What happened is very shocking and I would like to assure the mayor of my full support," the prime minister said from Salazie, near Saint-Denis de la Réunion, where she began a three-day visit.

'Lack of state support'

After the elected representative of this commune of Loire-Atlantique had complained about the "lack of support from the State" in this case, Elisabeth Borne said her desire to "better protect mayors", to "respond more effectively when there are threats", to "strengthen our action to intervene earlier, to be able to support mayors to identify their difficulties and better accompany them in the face of violence of which they may be victims".

The fact that this fire is linked to the relocation of a reception center for asylum seekers "shows that there is a rise of extremism in our country and obviously we must be very very vigilant on this subject," added the head of government. Elisabeth Borne assured that bringing "good answers", "hand in hand with local elected officials, this is how we will avoid these rises of extremism".

Saint-Brévin-les-Pins is, for several months, the center of tensions following a project to move near an elementary school the Reception Center for Asylum Seekers (Cada) which had opened in the seaside resort in 2016 after the dismantling of the "Calais jungle". Several demonstrations against this project were organized at the call of the extreme right, in particular the movement of Reconquest, the party of Eric Zemmour.
