A contractor at Shaare Zedek Hospital, a resident of East Jerusalem in his 50s, was arrested Wednesday night on suspicion of committing sexual offenses against low-functioning female patients he guarded. The suspect, a resident of Sur Bahir, was taken for interrogation and will be brought today for a hearing on extending his detention.
The investigation revealed that he has been working at the medical center for several months on behalf of an external company, and his job is to supervise hospitalized patients at a low level of functioning. It is suspected that the suspect took advantage of their situation and committed sexual offenses and indecent acts on them. Upon receipt of the complaint at the hospital, his employment was terminated immediately.

The hospital said: "Shaare Zedek received a complaint from a patient that an employee of an external company harassed her. Upon receipt of the complaint, an investigation was conducted, the work of the contractor employee suspected of the act and complaint was immediately stopped, and all the information was passed on to the police in order to open an investigation. Shaare Zedek has zero tolerance for violence and sexual harassment against employees and patients and works in full and intensive cooperation with the police to handle any case."
Last December, another investigation was opened following sexual and pedophilia offenses committed by two employees of Rambam Hospital in Haifa. One of them, 28-year-old Oren Hannaev from Kiryat Yam, was then indicted for sexual offenses after he photographed a nude woman while she was anesthetized before surgery. The charges also indicate that he took nude photos of a 4-year-old boy and sent them to his friend. In addition, Hannaev held thousands of photos and videos of a pedophilic nature.
