The metropolitan office has chosen to postpone as much as possible the mandatory implementation of a low-emission zone in the Bordeaux conurbation.

After the consultation, it's time for action. Like all cities with more than 150,000 inhabitants, the Bordeaux agglomeration has until 1 January 2025 to set up a low-emission mobility zone (ZFE-m), in order to comply with the climate law. A measure of limitation of circulation for the most polluting vehicles, which raises fears of an outcry from motorists. The metropolis of Bordeaux, led by the socialist Alain Anziani, has decided to put in place this regulation on January 1, 2025, as late as possible, "in accordance with the legal obligation".

Following a consultation conducted from March to November and a public consultation at the beginning of 2023, Bordeaux Métropole stresses that "the implementation of the EPZ raises many questions", partly because "the health issues of improving air quality in cities are not always perceived behind this approach". In 2020, air pollution caused at least 238,000 premature deaths in Europe.

The EPZ operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week

However, the consultation allows Bordeaux Métropole, whose board met on Thursday, May 11, to categorically affirm several points: the ZFE will be effective permanently, "in order to promote the readability of the measure for users", but "a derogation regime will allow those who must and have no alternative, to access within the perimeter ». This will concern the entire territory inside the ring road, with the exception of certain park-and-ride facilities where drivers of polluting vehicles will still have the possibility to park. The measure should be implemented in a "gradual" manner, with several levels of prohibition.

The Crit'Air vignette will soon become a real sesame to be able to circulate inside the Bordeaux ring road. The ZFE should initially only limit the circulation of the most polluting vehicles (Crit'Air 4, 5 or unclassified), i.e. about 7% of the metropolitan car fleet. In several years, the ban will then be extended to Crit'Air 3 and finally to Crit'Air 2. Electric or hydrogen vehicles (Crit'Air Verte) and those with the least polluting gasoline (Crit'Air 1) will not be affected by the EPZ.
