After him, the ocean. At the western tip of southern Europe, Portugal stands like a dam against the Atlantic. A strip of land where sun-drenched wines are grown and an art of living tinged with melancholy, which fills the air when notes of fado escape from a terrace of a district of Lisbon, so popular with tourists and yet so typical, still. And spring is the perfect season to make a getaway. Where to put your suitcases? From the family homes of Minho to the pousadas of the Algarve and our favorite hotels in the capital, here are our good addresses for a stay at the end of the Iberian Peninsula.

Unique: our ten favorite addresses in Portugal pousadas

Perched on the heights of Mount Santa Luzia, the pousada Viana de Castelo offers one of the most spectacular views in Portugal. Pestana Hotel Group/Pousadas de Portugal

Taste the thickness of silence between the walls of a monastery, spin from castles to palaces, the rooms of kings and queens for overnight stops... This is how is written the Portugal of pousadas, these historic buildings converted into hotels in 1942, by decision of the government. Over the course of acquisitions, the state undertook the restoration of the national architectural heritage. From the north to the south of the country, up to the Azores and Madeira, castles, palaces, monasteries, convents and historic hotels join the ranks of the pousadas.

OUR FAVOURITES

Ten charming hotels along the Douro

Welcome to the Douro, wine land of Portugal with fabulous landscapes but also beautiful hotels. (pictured at the Vintage House Hotel.) Press photo

The Douro River runs for more than 600 km in Spain before crossing the Portuguese border to cover its last 300 kilometres. Multiplying the meanders between the narrow valleys covered with vineyards and its Atlantic mouth near Porto, it is adorned with such splendours that in 2001 UNESCO inscribed this portion of the Alto Douro as a World Heritage Site. Whether you follow its contours by boat, by car or with the historic train of 1925, reactivated, to satiate the most beautiful landscapes in the world, you land on its banks in pretty hotels, often old quintas, wine properties adorned or not with stars.

Christian Louboutin opened the doors of his new hotel in the Alentejo

In Melides, Portugal, Christian Louboutin opened his first 13-room hotel in April 2023. His name? Vermelho. Vermelho / Press photo

On the Atlantic coast, 130 km south of Lisbon, the shoe designer with the famous red sole opens Vermelho, his first hotel. This address as surprising as it is refined is about to bloom in Melides, an Alentejo village with a crazy charm. We are twenty minutes from Comporta, another village already well invaded by an army of trendy hotels and happy few Lisbon. Conversely, Melides has kept an authentic and secret charm; that of these hamlets of Alentejo that sleep a few kilometers from the coast. Le Figaro visited it before it opened in early spring.
