In the middle of May: Five meters of snow on the Zugspitze – "significant" warning for Tyrol

2023-05-12T03:56:16.427Z

Highlights: May was supposed to herald early summer, but the mountains in Bavaria and Tyrol are in the depths of winter with snow. There hasn't been so much snow on Germany's highest mountain all winter. In neighboring Tyrol, the situation is even more dangerous: "We expect some spontaneous avalanches, some of which can be large," warns Patrick Nairz from the country's avalanche warning service on ORF. The dangerous situation mainly concerns very steep slopes above 2500 meters and the high alpine area above 3000 meters.

May was supposed to herald early summer, but the mountains in Bavaria and Tyrol are in the depths of winter with snow.

Garmisch-Partenkirchen/Innsbruck – On Wednesday morning, the regular crew fought their way through 60 centimetres of fresh snow that had fallen overnight on the viewing terrace of the Zugspitzhaus with snow ploughs and shovels. Officially, 2.60 meters are reported. There hasn't been so much snow on Germany's highest mountain all winter. And another 60 centimetres are to be added by next week – in case of permafrost. According to the Zugspitzbahn, the snow masses sometimes even pile up to five meters.

Snow on the mountains in Bavaria and Tyrol: Several avalanches have already fallen in May

This also means avalanche alert. "In the course of the day, wet snow avalanches can occasionally form. Fractures are also a potential source of danger in the high altitudes," announces the Bavarian avalanche warning service. In neighboring Tyrol, the situation is even more dangerous: "We expect some spontaneous avalanches, some of which can be large," warns Patrick Nairz from the country's avalanche warning service on ORF.

In the past few days, avalanches have already gone off by themselves due to the increasing soaking. "Now it will be the case due to the increasing additional load of fresh snow," says Nairz.

Snow in May: It could also be dangerous at low altitudes

The avalanche danger is now even "considerable". The dangerous situation mainly concerns very steep slopes above 2500 meters and the high alpine area above 3000 meters. But caution is also required in snow-free, lower terrain, says Nairz. "It's just dangerous at altitude. Anyone who is currently on the road must be aware of the increased risk."

On the Zugspitze, the danger is only for ski tourers. According to Verena Tanzer, spokeswoman for the Zugspitzbahn, the ski lifts have been closed since May 1 and the hiking trails have not been cleared. During the week there is no Zugspitzbahn, on Father's Day and the following Friday (18 and 19 May) it runs and from 25 May again daily.
