Republicans accuse Biden of being involved in a "criminal system" that includes bribery, among other things. They are calling for impeachment.

Frankfurt – Republican ex-US President Donald Trump was also the first president in US history to be impeached twice, after the end of his term. Now the Republicans in the US Congress are apparently working on some kind of revenge: they accuse President Joe Biden of involvement in a "criminal system", including bribery, and are calling for impeachment.

Republicans with delicate demand: They want impeachment for Biden

The basis of the accusation against Biden is probably a currently still secret report by the US domestic intelligence service FBI, as the US magazine Newsweek reported. Republican Senator Chuck Grassley and his Republican colleague James Comer in the House of Representatives are said to have learned from a whistleblower that the corresponding document actually exists under the name FD-1023. Now the two members of Congress are calling for the report to be published.

It is said to be about a "criminal system with the assignment of the then Vice President Joe Biden and a foreign citizen". Biden had served as vice president during the term of former President Barack Obama. Comer has already sent a subpoena to the FBI to release FD-1023. So far, it is unclear exactly what information the letter provides. In a press release, Grassley and Comer spoke of an "exchange of money for policy decisions."

Impeachment for Biden? Republican representative puts pressure on FBI chief

Republican Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene, known for her radical ideas and statements, now sees the possibility of Biden's impeachment. Now they have evidence of Biden's "criminality" and can initiate impeachment proceedings, she stressed in a Twitter video in early May. She called on FBI Director Christopher Wray to disclose FD-1023, which would show that Biden had been paid by a foreigner for certain decisions. "That means Joe Biden is going to be removed from office," Greene said.

Speaking to Newsweek, a White House spokesman, Ian Sams, criticized the Republicans' plans. They would spread "anonymous insinuations" about their allies and right-wing media. In this way, the Republican camp wants to distract from their own "unpopular ideas," Sams explained.

What would Biden's impeachment mean?

An actual impeachment of Biden is unrealistic. It is true that the Republicans, with their majority in the House of Representatives, could initiate a procedure. But for Biden to really have to vacate the White House, the Senate would also have to agree. There, Biden's Democrats have the majority.

And even if Biden were to lose his office, the Republicans would not have gained too much. In contrast to a motion of no confidence in Germany, there are no new elections. Instead, Vice President Kamala Harris would follow Biden in the White House. (bb)
